Microsoft's running a campaign where you can update to Win8 for 249NOK (roundabout 27GBP) until 31st of January.
I dunno if it's an international campaign, but anyways - aside from the indie dev issue(s), what are the pros and cons?
Should I upgrade for my lappy?

The public test build thing did remarkable things as far as boot-time was concerned. I really liked that, and it'd be great on a Lappy.
The rest of it's bollocks.

What indie dev issues are there? All your standard desktop stuff should work fine, it's only on the net Windows store where people have claimed ideological problems.

Putting that aside, Windows 8 is excellent. The start screen is different, but you get used to it, and it's very pretty and just as fast. It's also much more mouse friendly. Bigger icons that don't move around, like the 'recent programs' on the Win7 start menu, means you can shave a few milliseconds.

IE is usable again, for the first time, since when IE 6 was actually deemed modern. There are also lots of little things improved, like the new task manager, and being able to perform a reinstall is built in.

Is it really true that Windows 8 has adverts in metro applications? Sod that.

Metro applications can have adverts, like iOS, and it's up to the app developer. Although you'd probably expect many free ones will.

The annoying thing is that some of the official MS apps have adverts in them; that's the bit I really don't like. Even Apple doesn't put ads in their official apps, and it sets a precident that ads everywhere is ok.
