But, I'm in need of advice, as usual, in my chaotic mess.

Whipped up something in Bosca Ceoil tonight which felt like it might sound okay?

Any particular Instrument groups that go well together, advice on notes that work nicely, that sort of thing would be great.

Music. How do I even?

Just noticed a really useful scales features inside Bosca Ceoil so, I had another try, just with a simple bassline and some scales.

I think it could work well as part of a game intro, I'm just playing around with it as part of my Ludum Dare Prep.

Chords and Scales

Gahh, updated the link now, apparently Bosca Ceoil was still exporting the previous file....shamblez

I create music in the same way that I create sprites. I'm not exactly "up" on my music. I know bits, like basic chords and things, but I would never claim to be knowledgable.
What I do, however, is I rely on my ability to recognise "bad"..
Just like my art style, anything goes, as long as my brain doesn't go "eeeeeuuuww!!"
As long as you can hear "bad" music, and can stay clear of that, you should be ok.

Twiddle and fiddle, and see what appears

This bad advice was brought to you by the letters A and L.

When I started out years ago I just used a good existing song and then I would delete the song data and use the instruments set to make something new. I also used to stare at good music playing in the editor and try to copy it myself later on.

It can take a while before you get good at making music though. If you make a few hundred songs then you will notice that the music should sound better by then. There is no book that I know of that teaches you anything worth while. I bought books and looked around but nothing is worthy, It is still good luck and experience making something good. If you end up with 1 in ten songs that sound good then you are probably doing allright.

What I never did was to take notes and write down instrument types and such that go with music styles I liked. I just made something each time. I never made anything really good. Though I met people who did not believe I made certain songs that I made. That I saw as a compliment

What also helps is to memorise tracks. Drums and bass and such. It will start to become your style I think.

What I regretted now is that I never tought of training my voice earlier. Your voice is a synthesyzer. You can train it to make any voice for in your music (rap and such) It does not take long before you can make yourself sound like any rapper or singer(short bits) Try it. It is fun to do to.

I could say things and sound as a famous actor or rappers voice. Though I have not recorded anything of it yet.

musictheory.net is a good site with free, concise lessons and exercises.

There are also a number of YouTube channels devoted to teaching musical composition. Here is one video that's part of a series:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWbH1bhQZSw

My advice is to study, starting with the very basics, and take it one step at a time. You learned to write code, and you can learn to write music, too.

Okay, I played with some inversions and layering a bit more tonight, heck, even more than 1 instrument!

Loop Me Do

The musictheory.net videos gave me some more ideas on how I could go about things, thanks Dither!

Any suggestions are welcome.

You're welcome

Your song has a nice rhythm to it and the sound reminds me of early '80s games. I like it.
