I have a tin-foil hat type theory that hardware manufacturers deliberately write their firmware to perform worse and worse over time, with the intention of encouraging us to periodically replace it when we wouldn't normally have to.

In the case of Apple and Samsung I'd put money on it.

Apple definitely.

Try owning an iPhing that's more than a couple of years old, and you'll have a hard time running anything decent.

It's not all new-tech, new-abilities, new-features, though..
A lot of the "failures" of "old/new tech" are down to badly coded crap, and bloatware, and the horrorshow of libraries built on top of libraries and further libraries beneath..
You can't tell me than a original iPhone1 can't handle Multitasking when my Amiga coped admirably.

RAWR!!

Yeah, apple certainly force hardware obsolescence on users, I believe there's even scheduled timeframes for these sorts of things. I could even believe they turn the wick down on the processor after a year or so of usage to be honest.

I'm sticking with old versions of software for as long as possible myself, unless I find a legit reason for me to upgrade it. Still running Windows 7 with Photoshop CS3 from 2007 over here. It's served me really well for any graphics editing I need to do.

Apple just dropped marketplace support for the iPad 4 also didn't they recently?

I'm back to using my early 2000's copy of PaintshopPro7.
When Win10 first appeared, it broke compatibility with PSP7, so I had to upgrade to PSPX7 instead.
Thankfully, MS actually did something useful for the first time in a long time, and a couple of updates later, PSP7 was back to fully working condition!!

Yup, still using PSP7 here, simply because 8+ they goofed up the UI and it become more photoshopy, can't stand it. If it's a basic art tool, keep the interface basic.
