Oh cack, sorry to hear that me auld fruit... I did hear they were having trouble... Not sure if you want to stay in retail, but there is Nissan where I work, I'm a contractor for them, so dont work direct, but I'm in the factory 5 days a week: https://careersatnissan.co.uk/job/temporary-manufacturing-staff/

Just to continue...

They are paying off quite a few people at the minute, the tabloids have it down as "Ohhhh noooo, Nissan are laying of 500 staff... BREXIT will have us DOOOMEEDDDD!!!", but, its not that, they are wanting to get rid of 500 of the old guard due to them being on massive salaries/packages/pensions, and new staff members are on a new setup, basically, it took only 12 years to hit your highest salary for your band, now it takes 22 or something.

The thought process is, one supervisior can be on £30000, then one just further down the line is on £60000 because he's been there for ages. Yeah, its cost cutting, but you can see the sense... And what the papers dont tell you with their auld barer of bad news reporting is, these 500 people will leave with a top pension AND a £30000 golden handshake, but they'll not tell anyone that as it doesnt make sour news!

Anyway, just a thought... Like anything, factory work, you can either do it, or you cannot, but I'll give Nissan their due, their training is second to none, they do let people develop their skills further, and it might say "temporary", but what happens is, people get put on a "we'll see what your like" contract before they give them full time contracts.

For Poundworld (I might be wrong though) it seems to be a brexit thing. The pound had dropped considerably against the dollar, which is used for international buying, so the cost of the products has rocketed. When you consider how difficult it is to buy anything for £1 in recent years, these sort of places make very little profit to start with. I'm surprised this business model has lasted as long as it has.

Yeah, when you solidly state "Just a Pound", you kinda back yourself into a corner, price wise!!

When I was a kid there used to be “50p shops” everywhere, but those shortly became generic discount stores up until the relatively recent £1 craze took off.
Perhaps in the year 2040, we'll all be shopping at "Fiverama"..?

Sorry to hear about your inevitable job loss. I’m sure the jobs won’t simply disappear, though. There’ll probably be a transition where a lot of staff get laid off, but if it's as big and varied a warehouse as I imagine it is, then other companies might like to have access to it. It may very well continue under new management. (Or even the same management, rebranded)

Losing your job sucks. Hopefully though you'll find omething that -

a) Pays better
b) Is more enjoyable
c) Isn't negatively affected by Brexit in the future.

Good luck.

Yep... I bet margins are tighter then a fish's arse... And considering rents in the high street are generally set as if a town's centre was the next best thing to Oxford Street, minimum wages generally creep up... On and on it goes!

The high street has been going downwards even before Brexit happened, yep, its squeezed retail, but now, most are getting out of town centres and heading into retail parks, some are even hooking up sharing floor space.

M&S in Durham closed in the city centre and moved 3.5 miles to a new place in the Arnison Centre... Argos done the same and ended up in the same place (Inside Sainsburys), dont think it'll be long before Next or River Island do it as well, more will follow... And That just shows to me how fucked our high street is.

They are regenning a lot in Durham at the moment, but it seems, not particular aimed at retail, mostly branded restaurants, bars, a few hotels and shit tons of student accommodation to service the University.

I wouldn't say its all change, I'd mostly say its been changing for a while and its now more noticeable when things "go" from the place, as noone is moving into the empty premises, because there is no incentive too!

The big difference, now, though, is that it's mostly hitting the discount places.
Sure, Woolworths fell YEARS ago, but most of the big hits have been expensive places that overcharged for things.
Now that Brexit's in full swing, it's the rising costs that’s fucking up the discount places, too.

... we're fucked, basically..

I’m sticking with Amazon

Thats me as well... I have money to spend, unfortunately though, I'm tired of going somewhere to get something and be greeted with "We have none in stock, but we can order you it online, or if you want, we have this, thats pretty much not what you want... But we have it"

Like I mentioned above, Argos is now in Sainsburys over my way, and I shop at Sainsburys, so I just nipped in to try and find a backpack for Derek, so I went in, they have tablets all over the shop... And search for backpacks, typically, the ones that I was after werent in stock, but, if I wanted a Thomas The Tank engine one... I would've been sorted!!!

Went home, and ordered one from Amazon thats spot on!!! \o/ yay

Which is also part of the problem. The 'bargain' shops sell cheap crap mostly, at a similar price to what you can get online.

Yeah, but I've an excuse!!

Plus, even if I COULD get into town to visit the poundshop, there's a £4.80 bus-fare to add on top!

Turned it down. Unfortunately they could only offer me part time, which won't pay the bills long term. Shame though, all of the staff I encountered seemed really happy there.

Damn...

But, yeah. Part time won’t help pay bills, especially heading into Brexit. Everything's going to go up in price.
It might be hard to find the best job to fit. :/

Pretty much everything is part-time nowadays. My 21year old son went through exactly the same shit. He ended up with two part time jobs.

Anyway, you're too intelligent for PC World.

Its a killer now, because not like before, where you could walk into a job, everything is ticket this and ticket that, have you been on this course and have you been on that one!

Even machine drivers now (Diggers, forks etc), they give out tickets like confetti at a wedding, though no one ever mentions that to get an advertised job, you needed X amount of logged hours on them before you are even considered.

And there's even the lower ranked building jobs, take a labourer, now, I dont really mean to belittle them as they are the backbone of any building site really, and they dont get paid a vast sum, but even as a labourer, someone that is unskilled you still need to go through:-

CITB Site Safety Plus: Health & Safety Awareness Course (1 day)

or

QCF Level 1/SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (1-5 days)

or

IOSH Working Safely Course (1 day)

Then, you'll need to pass the Health & Safety Test, which is like the driving theory test.

Then when you've got all them right, you go to a building site, and it's not uncommon to spend a full day sitting through an induction.

Bloody madness just for a man/woman to venture around a building site tidying up!

Then you can move the next level up to say, a ground worker, and on top off all that, you need confined spaces training and shitloads of other guff!

A lot of companies do provide this training, but generally, they dont really want to unless they are really stuck and will go on the look out for people that are already through this sort of shenanigans.

Oh, and a driving license is a must as well nowadays!
