WIP - Pen and Paper?

I've had a vague idea in my head for a couple of months..
Using my super-elite ProcGen skills, I could generate all manner of levels and things, and I've been wondering about making puzzle games.
The initial plan was to have a webpage which shows random puzzles, and you then try to solve them. But some needed mouse controls, some needed keyboard input, some required scoring, others didn't.
It's really flamin' well hard to figure out where to put all that onto the screen, and doing it in a webpage makes it even harder.

Last night, as I sat awake at 2 in the morning, my head went "What if it wasn't online..?"
I hunted the net for easy ways to paper-ise this plan, and one things I've found is this..

If you make a slice across the thick black center chunk, you can fold first across the length, then do a couple of folds along the height, before inverting the fold where the slice was made.

The result is an 8 page booklet, of a fairly decent size, which can be folded easily to bring any of the 8 pages to the "outside" of the booklet.

That's really handy, and having a little pocketbook of daily puzzles might be fun.

..
Is this something I should continue with?
D'you think anyone would give a crap!?!

I can see your idea, and think its a pretty cool concept, but the big'un is... Can you jazz it up in such a way to detract the "Why dont you just use a booklet" comments which will inevitably come.

Set it apart I guess, make it marketable, something like "Folduzzles" or something... I'm sure you'll get what I mean.

Why would anyone use such a thing? Easy that one, and right up my street... Travelling, I get bored when going from A-Z

Planes wise, your generally pampered inflight, but, connections are a pig, and I do make loads of them because I end up usually off the beaten track a little, do multi stopovers or just long connection times, my trip to Ebolie next year is 3 flights believe it or not... Newcastle->Amsterdam->Rome->Naples, even my trip to Padavo was a long stop over in Bordeaux (8 hours). When I'm waiting, I do buy magazines, listen to music, but you still need a bit of something, and puzzles are exactly for that bit break... So a handy little flippable thing might just be the ticket... Its small, size of a passport will be ideal, yeah, I like the idea.

Ohh yeah, you could make it a maze where you have to fold the paper to get from one area to the next. That might make it rather unique

^I like that too

Here... I'm 40 year old right, and if I'm ever in Micky D's or whereever and they have one of them kids puzzle paper things in the tray to stop it getting minging... I fill 'em in!

Seems like a useful idea to me
You could put your insane word-searches on there, and yeah, the multi-page maze sounds fun.

The multipage maze wouldn't be "shufflable".. The folded paper booklet isn't magic

Yeah, my list so far is a crazy word-search, a 9-letter Countdown Conundrum style thing (eg, make as many words as you can, and try to find the 9 letter word), a Countdown Number Game thing (6 numbers + a 3 digit target), a hi-res version of the Pixelarf Scrawl that I use for doing daily doodles, and possibly Sudoku if it's workable at a small size.

All of the above can be generated randomly, so you'll have a nice selection of puzzles if you want to print it off each morning..
*shrugs*

Finally got this project going, tonight, and so far I’ve got Letter Lattice and a basic Crossword type thing in.
They both seem to work well enough, I think..!?

I’ll have a nosey, ta.
Feel free to suggest more. I’d love to have a big catalogue that folk can choose from, then bookmark their favourite layouts for daily reprints!

Mmmm, I'm not too keen on that if I'm honest... I think the name should represent the foldable aspect of the setup, because thats its gimmick.

Befuddly Folds or along them lines.

Another thing I thought is that, if this is an app thingy me jiggy, you could have all the puzzles online (which keeps the app lean, and the user will always have a constant update to newer puzzles without having to update the app every other day), the user downloads them and obviously these get stamped on their print out (If thats how you are doing it), but, instead of putting the solution on the print out, just give each puzzle an ID and the user, if they want, can view the solution through the app as well.

Foldapuzz?

App is currently not happening, and this is 100% web -> pen and paper!
There'll be* a webpage where you can choose which of the various puzzle types you want, then it'll give you a url that creates the puzzle-sheet for you.
(so, if you really like the Lattice, you can just have a page full of those)

*The generator already is : WIP webpage (Where A = Crossed, B = Lattice, C = Doodle)

I like the setup, but think it needs to be a bit larger so theres more space around the "FOLD" letters, a touch of bright colours so you can highlight the "A" that you've cleverly tucked in there, and I'm think "Puz" should be all the same size as well.

Just my thoughts on it

Yeah, I’ll be doing a proper version on the laptop. These were quickly done on the iPad. Top is freehand (can you tell.) second is drawn in a 64x64 Pixelart tool.

Next I’ll do a “proper” version, using PSP, and.. I think probably just the skew function oughta do the trick..?

Need a nap, first, though

foldapuz.com/foldapuz.png is the official URL for a puzzle page. You can add a ?Layout=AAAAAAAA (With A, B, C, D, and E currently functional) to try out different layouts.

The .png request redirects to a .php, (via .htaccess) which then either generates the page from scratch, or grabs the image from the cache.
Hopefully (although obviously untested!) the cache should refresh each morning. I'll be checking that, tomorrow.

Next will be writing a website that lets you flick through the various puzzles and put together your own page.
The site will simply generate a "Layout=" url, and you can then bookmark that URL for daily puzzles.
Then it should be good to go!!

.. Needs more puzzles types, first, though.

You can save the pages to your iPad, and scribble using any/all tools you can find!
I’d suggest using Markup in the Photos app, but I don’t think your iOS will have it..

Lesson learned : Proper mazes are insanely hard to generate, if you want them to be hard to solve!!

Couple of tweaks, tonight, but nothing major.
I tweaked the Doodle generator ( C ) to be a little less messy. It's still curving lines, but nowhere near as erratically. I might tweak it further, if it starts to get a bit "samey"
I also tweaked Target (D - The countdown numbers game) so that it solves the puzzles itself to ensure the targets are achievable.

...Still not happy with the maze generator!!

Oh, and to whoever was trying to get it to generate a layout with lowercase letters, those don't work, yet!! I'm leaving myself the lowercase for future expansion.
0 to 9 + A to Z + a to z = 62 different puzzle types.
Doubt I'll get to that, but ... *shrugs*
