Re-Roomifying

I used to have a lovely bedroom with a nice big corner desk. It was great!

Then 2012 happened and I became somewhat adverse to sitting at a desk any more.
Plus, the comfort of having a laptop on the couch, as well as having gotten used to a trackpad instead of a mouse. It became obvious that I no longer needed a desk.
The computer was confined to a shelf, and the desk was eventually removed altogether in 2014, when I replaced the desk with a couple of large bookshelves, and left the corner unattended.

Since then, the corner was occupied by a frantic pile of boxes, from boardgames to old console boxes, and everything in between.

This year, me and Mum, but mostly Mum, have decided it's probably not all that healthy living in a bedroom full of cardboard boxes, which have sprawled in an inward direction, taking up swathes of the floor of the bedroom.

A plan was decided upon, and bit by bit, each day we're doing about an hour in the room. Clearing out everything, demolishing my 20 year old chest of drawers, and buying some new ones.

Day Eight or so..

The clutter of cardboard from the middle of the room has been shifted into the spare bedroom.
The huge pile in the corner is in three states..
1. Old but half-decent board games, ready to go to the charity shop.
2. So many old console boxes, demolished and put into the recycling bin. I'm a hoarder, and won't be flogging my consoles any time soon. There's really no need to keep old empty boxes. Get rid.
3. A select few remain. Heroquest, Star Wars Battleships, Monopoly, and Krylar's Commodore 64.

The corner's clear, but for an old PC tower, which (iirc) has the Windows 8 preview build on it, freshly installed just prior to me ending up in hospital.
Meanwhile, the bookcases have been jam packed with literally everything from game cases to haphazardly stacked bits of tech, and more.

Oh my god, the amount of crap I had in that corner. You would never believe it.

The whole room now has an incredible layer of dust on it, so thick it's unbearable, and I'm coughing profusely.
The bookcase shelves were only just dusted down a week or so ago, and yet just from shifting all the boxes and dismantling a small unit, the dust has clung to everything like some kind of mystical storm!!
Gah!!
The fan's on full blast, windows are open, and a couple of new feather dusters have been purchased!!

The corner is near enough empty.
Vacuuming will be done tomorrow, and then I'm getting a nice and simple desk from IKEA, which should be sorted in the next day or two, depending on how energetic I'm feeling.

Once that's done, all my tech will be shifted from one corner of the room to the other, freeing up the entire side to be overhauled with new chest of drawers..
It's a big big job, and .. honestly we've barely started.
I'm expecting the other side of the room to take about two weeks.. maybe more..
There's a ton of stuff over there.

What DO you do with several hundred videotapes?!

More pics as and when it's presentable

LOL, well you sell some, donate some and keep the best ones.

I'm down to only about this much, though there are a good bit in storage. These shelves used to be full and when my grandmother was alive, we had a couple 1000. She recorded everything. Sadly most of those are gone. They would have had a ton of great old commercials and stuff.

Videotapes? What are they?

Mostly stuff that is family friendly, kids stuff, some home movies, and some old tv shows. Of course a little bit of the expected stuff, like Star Wars, LOTR & Disney.

Here is just a small sample of some random tapes.

I didn't mean what is on the videotapes, I meant what ARE videotapes!

As for your selection, I can honestly say that I've only ever seen The Snowman therre - never heard of the others.

Gotta say, those desk drawers were easily some of the easiest and most sturdiest drawers I've ever put together.
Daaamn, no wonder everyone raves about IKEA!!

Took about 4 hours in total, but we had a hefty break in between.

Desk linkage £93
Monitor stand linkage £25
Plus forty fucking quid for delivery? Gits.
These are the things we must do, when all the neighbours are back at work..

Ffs..

Next, I need to order the two chests of drawers. One long wide 6 drawer unit and a second slimmer 3 drawer unit.
Unfortunately they're currently out of stock.
If they're not back by some time in the next week or so, I'll probably end up getting a different set. As long as they're white and wide, to fill the space, they'll do the job.

.. additional : those dark bookcases look well out of place, now.. fuxake..

@jayenkai You gotta do a good bit of dusting mate, that's not good for your health, breathing that stuff in. Maybe get an air purifier with multiple levels of filtration, will do wonders for you. Mine is great, large particle filter, odor and small particle filter and a carbon charcoal filter for vocs. It's an Oreck. Got mine at a thrift store for $5. It was filthy, so I had to disassemble it to clean it but was well worth it, considering they're so pricey new. Really keeps the dust down and the air clean. Would be great for you and mum.

That's quite a nice desk that... I have a Ikea one too in the man cave... A Malm setup, bedroom furniture is the same... Only ones I actually like from there at the time... But that one looks quite tidy like!

To be fair mind, I dont go to Ikea much to actually see, I hate it in there... It's like going through the duty free trap in an airport, only difference is really your confident you'd make it out of the duty free one without dying of starvation first!

Mmm, Malm, you say?
Yep, those are the drawers I'm aiming for! \o/yeay\o/

Note, I'd originally selected a higher "Goliat" desk, but eventually realised I'd need to cram a fuckton of stuff under it, rather than over it. The giant laser printer will need to go down under it, hence why there's an extra piece of wood under the desk in my photo. It's a leftover from my previous unit and is there for placing the printer on!!

@ProHiScore.
Yeah, the insane amounts of dust are, I expect, mostly from the pair of us sitting here ripping up a fuckton of old cardboard boxes. The room typically gets a good quality dusting every month or so.. it's super-important given all those Starships and LEGO builds that are dotted around the place.
We were super surprised by how much dust appeared just from clearing out "the box graveyard"!

Let that be a lesson.. dust your boxes, not just your nice things!

Ahh yes, I understand the box graveyard thing. I happen to have 5 very large boxes distributed about the house which can't be removed for obvious, potential house moving purposes.

Related, there's a good amount of floor space "free" in the bedroom but that's kinda needed.

CDs, DVDs, Dreamcast, DS cases, they're not going where I thought they were...
Well, I guess once everything else is sorted I can give them proper shelf space, instead.

IKEA stuff is usually pretty decent, mostly. Easy to put together too,

I've got three IKEA desks.

The first is from the early-mid 1990's and it is perfect. Long, with keyboard shelf at one end above a mini shelving area and a space at the other end for another smaller pull out desk. I got rid of the pull out desk recently, as I built my own little shelf underneath to make more of the storage area.

The second is from the min 2000's, nice blue smaller desk, with keyboard shelf.

The final one is a metal framed slim desk with a glass top from not so long ago. This is what I work on. The others are full with vintage computers and my gaming PC. At the moment I have a Vic 20 (of course) with a C64 close by for swap out, a CPC 6128, an Acorn Electron, a Vectrex, an IBM AT (huge heavy beast), A PET Mini and a Spectrum Next, all ready and accessible to play. Everything else is in boxes.

Spent most of today emptying the under-the-bed drawers, so my desk currently holds mostly underwear with everything else bundled into the spare room for once the big chest of drawers are in. Instead, the big under-the-bed drawers now hold an absolute fuckton of videotapes!

Still have to empty + refill the other bed drawer, and there's a lot of videos remaining!!!

Meanwhile the desk is currently being cluttered to high heaven, and I've not even started moving the tech over there. Good grief!!
Those little acrylic drawers will eventually go back over, beside my bed, on the new chests of drawers, but.. in the meantime.. clutter city!
The Mac Magic Mouse thing doesn't like the plain wood on the desk. It's "ccrrrrrrr"ing as it moves.
Might be the first time in about 20 or 30 years that I've needed a mouse mat!!!

In the mean meantime, we've started emptying the bookcase shelves and dusterating everything down.. but after everything else we've done today, that took a back seat.

The middle drawer of the desk now houses my entire CPC collection of games.
"Why hide them away?" I hear you ask.
Don't worry, they'll be out once the bookcases get reorganised.
But it sure is nice being able to fit all the tapes, disks, extra wires and such, all in one great big drawer... Maaan, those drawers go WAY back!!!

The Malm's are back in stock, today, but delivery won't be until next week, so we have the next few days to finish off emptying the ginormous shelf of allsorts, as well as moving my tech from that side of the room, before we get to build up all the new drawers.
Woot!

Also, I added a little stool to my ikea order.

I tried sitting on my swivelly desk chair, yesterday, whilst shuffling a few things...
Good grief, that is NOT good for my motion sickness!!!
A plain generic little static stool will have to do, in future.

Not much done, today.
Moving the Router and the NAS was more than enough. Mum had to get out the big ladders and feed the giant yellow Ethernet cable through the suspended ceiling, from one side of the room to the other.
I tried my damndest to help, but looking up causes severe wobbly/sickness, so I ended up being pretty much fucking useless.
... one of those "hey, you're still broke, remember" kinda days.
*ugh*

Still shuffling the desk. The Mac and Monitor are up and running, the mouse and Pokémon keyboard work well.
The little MegaDrive USB needs to go under the monitor stand, as it's currently dangling wires over the stand's drawer.
There's still a clutter where the little acrylic drawers are, but those will be organised once the other half of the room's done.

The computer rarely gets sat down at, only for basic configuring. It's actually Remote Desktop'd to a LOT more. Since I'm on a MacBook now, it's handy to have Windows at the ready, to leap into as and when it's needed.
.. Even if Windows is running on a MacMini!!!

I might upgrade that at some point. It'd be nice to have a semi-decent Windows machine at the ready.
I think I'm actually waiting for a proper Windows-On-Arm that'll run on a newer M1(/M2!?) MacMini.. Once that appears, I might make the switch.
.. Though.. Will all the Blitzes run on that?
Doubtful.
Hmmm...

Tonight, the fact that everything now over on the other side of the room, has started to hit home. Having to get up to plug the phone, and the Switch, both into the Mac, all the way over there, instead of simply reaching to the shelf by my bed where they usually sit!!
The shelf is ... slowly.. being cleared out so that it can be removed, then replaced with the new chests-of-drawereses.
It's currently a clutter of cables where the Mac+Monitor were, this morning, alongside the Amiga+GameCube and those two monitors that I never did actually use.

I wonder if I could hook the Amiga/Consoles up to an old flat panel monitor somehow..?
Do they do Scart to VGA adaptors?! Hmmm...

|edit| Apparently, yes they do exist.. .. He says, holding one in his hands, wondering when the hell he bought it, and why he never used it.. .. Maybe it didn't work very well..!? |edit|

|edit| No sound.. The spare monitor doesn't have sound. I'd need to buy some speakers that work from co-axial connectors.. Hmmm.. |edit|

OK, the continuing oddness of a random Scart->VGA cable.

Checked Amazon, and Amazon says I got it in 2014, which seems to line up with when I got rid of my old desk.
Seems I had this plan in mind, way back when, which also explains why I've stumbled upon a pair of PC speakers near the spare monitor.
I must've already had this in mind. Yet, I have no recollection of ever doing this... Which is a bit scary, if I'm honest.

So, the plan then, would appear to be to place consoles and computers along the top of the new drawers once they're in, alongside a pair of speakers and one of the spare monitors.
Sounds like a good idea.
Thanks, Jay of 2014! You planned ahead!!

* Assuming the old pair of speakers still works.. .. And the old monitor, too... Heck, there's no guarantee the old systems work, either!!

|edit| Of course, there's also the possibility that the cable doesn't actually work.. |edit|

Nice work matey! Yeah, re-organizing can take a lot out of you. It takes good naps to get our mind to wrap around our everyday real world changing around us. Not always fun, but sometimes very necessary.

Cool little workstation. I hope it aids in productivity.

On another note, I noticed your few puzzles on the shelf and thought I'd share our little puzzle collection.
