Tis the season of beer. Do you drink?
What do you drink - do you go:

Local?

Russian?

Irish?

American?

Traditional?

When do you drink? (I.E in the weekends, from 1 - 30th of December, all year round)
Are you addicted?
Do you have any kids?
What's your favourite type of yule brew?

Merry yule!

I'll start.

Our local brewery makes beer that tastes like coffee filtered through a sock;

So I usually go for the Danish variant, imported;

Edit: I used to go Russian all the way, but after being treated for addiction, I've pretty much stayed away from the Russian Bear.

Edit: LOL, I just discovered there's an English beer called Hobgoblin

I pick whichever lagar they have available. Typically Carlsberg, Carling, Fosters or Heineken. I'd like to drink some real ales, but they can be very hit and miss and more expensive.

I don't like to drink spirits or wine because it's too easy to get wasted.

Did you know Carlsberg is Danish? I'm surprised they import that to the UK!

Carlsberg is produced and expored all over the world. They even used to have a factory in Hong Kong!

So it's like Coca Cola? How extraordinary!
Carlsberg also produces Tuborg (see above), but it's only exported to Norway and perhaps Sweden.

Vodka is probably my favorite, but only in very small amounts in mixed drinks.

Lager is also an option -- most ales have too many hops for my taste. Mike's Hard Cranberry Lemonade is also good, because it basically tastes like cranberry lemonade, which is delicious, alcoholic or not.

I've never had enough to be drunk before, though, and I have no intention of changing that. It seems much more frightening than enjoyable.

I drink lager, currently my usual is Carlsberg, I got a taste for it when I went on holiday and that's the only lager they had at the hotel bar. Before that though, it was mainly Fosters.
JL235 - do you not find that Heineken has a sort of bananarish after taste?

As for the other questions, I don't have a drinking problem, although I have no trouble drinking any time of the day/any day of the week. I don't have any kids, and what does a Russian bear have to do with anything?

Unfortunately, I'm only 18. But *hypothetically* I would drink:

(Hypothetically, if it were legal, I "would have" gotten a bottle for my birthday yesterday)

Read the label!

Sosiohistoric note: Russia used to be referred to as 'the (giant) bear' because of it's size and might back in WWII and the cold war. Even today, some people, when discussing politics and military tactics, refer to Russia as 'the sleeping bear'.

Edit: Oh yeah, and 'the Russian bear' is a national personification for Russia as well.

Nolan: Irish Mist? Isn't that Absinth?

I have Absinth in my closet, but I'm as of yet unsure whether or not it's 'real', because it's simply too strong for me to drink enough to see whether or not I get the green fairy.

Edit: 55%, smuggled from Germany.

Nope, not at all. It's caramel liquor. Sweet with a burn.

I don't drink because I can't drink. Silly US laws.

I imagine if I did, I would probably go for the first that Nolan suggested, since that sounds good.

Over here, drinking at 15 is common. Even though the legal drinking age is 18. Are these laws taken more seriously in the US, or abroad in general?

Good lord, what's with all the pictures?
I've spent all day at work, making the new Xmas offer leaflet, and the last thing I expected was to be bombarded with MORE pictures of bottles of booze!!

*sigh*

As most of you know, I'm not a drinker.
AGameAWeek would be a bit longer if I did!

ps. Hotlinking is ALWAYS evil, even if it's a company's images. We've got an uploader, you know!

No, underage drinking is fairly common, which is unsurprising given the completely absurd age limit of 21. In my case, I just don't see any reason to spend the effort getting booze illegally. Better and more interesting things to do and all that.

Google's Image Search has been hotlinking from day 1! I just transferred the links.

Cower: Is it illegal to buy alcohol to/for minors in the states? It is illegal here, but I've never known anyone to have been arrested for it.

redmoth: Chocolate lager? Sounds interesting! I have to try that some day.

Phoenix: Same thing here. The average starting age is between 13 and 15. There are always complaints about it, but the laws aren't really taken any more seriously for that reason. Especially with the rush of Indian/Pakistani/Afghani people coming into Norway during the 90s. You want a beer, just go into a foreign shop!

Google doesn't hotlink the thumbnails.

I fall in to the under-21 law in the US. I've had a bunch of common beers (Coors, Miller) but haven't found a favorite.

The under-21 law here is pretty strictly enforced. People get in trouble here all the time for being a minor and being intoxicated.

At one point, alcohol was banned in the US. Thats probably why we have these stricter laws.

For me any good whiskey would do.
Other than that some local Norwegian beer.
Dahls.

or the christmas version

Best Norwegian beer there is, might be hard to find it outside of Trøndelag(The area I live in) though.

Christmas in China without Norwegian beer will be hard. We have Carlsberg here, but it only tastes good once every year.

It's Stella or Kronenbourg for me. 5% ABV and cheap enough. Or a £3.50 bottle of red wine.

I wish I could find a proper (>10%) German beer though.

If I'm going for taste, it'd be Spitfire or Boddingtons. You can't go wrong with anything Welsh, either!

Don't much like Hobgoblin - weird flavour.

edit: Redmoth has good taste!

It's a longstanding cultural influence that makes alcohol taboo in the US. A lot of our heritage draws from the original Puritans and Quakers whose mindset included no alcohol or any substance that has an influence on you (including things like caffeine). So, there have been movements in the past like Prohibition (no alcohol movement in the early 20th century).

The drinking age was 18 up until the mid 80's, when the federal government imposed a law on the states such that if they didn't change their drinking age to 21, then they would get a 10% penalty on their federal road money.

Naturally, the states fell in line.

There's been some movement to get the age back to 18, in particular with having 100 college presidents sign a thing to get it lowered. But, who knows what will happen -- I doubt anything will change until I'm 21.
