Socoder -> What Have You Done -> What Have You Done - 2014

Ups

What did you get done this year?
  • Sixty Two!!

Did everything turn out as planned?
    Almost.
I'd've liked to have achieved 12 games for each of my three OneGameAMonth accounts, but around October, my Nan's unexpected passing away caused a bit of a hiccup in my coding schedule. After that I was too focussed on getting Alpha Collexion finished, so had to leave behind the plans to do three 1GAM accounts.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • New Archive
  • Various SoCoder tweaks
  • A few more games

    Why not?
Things got fairly hectic around November, and then December hit.
I had planned to get a LOT of stuff done during December, but the chaos of November completely knackered me out, and instead I pretty much wasted the entire damn month, sitting around the house playing Smash Bros!
    ...ho hum!

    Now

What are you working on right now?
I should be working on my first AGameAWeek of 2015, but am instead finding myself mulling over ideas for SpikeDislike3.
    This is a worrying situation.

    How's that going?
    I really need to focus.

    Next

What's the plan for the year ahead?
  • Archive
  • SpikeDislike3
  • Online Functionality

    Aaah, those online scoreboards.
    ...
I'll get around to those, some day..

I must admit, I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of SD3. The ideas in my head are a little bit odd, but hopefully it all comes together well.
    *shrugs*

    Ups

What did you get done this year?
  • Started a bunch of games
  • Finished a couple of them off also!
  • Finally managed to find time for game jams again after almost a year without them.

Did everything turn out as planned?

Haha, nope, not at all, although my time for coding seems a lot more reliable than at the start of the year, which is great, aiming for a more productive 2015.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • They Are Everywhere. Oh my god, I HAVE to finish and give that game a proper launch soon!
  • Many other games that got started but just aren't 100% finished...Number Racer, Crystal Catch, Tetris VS, Porting Invasion VS to Tablets
  • UnDone

    Why not?
Mostly parental duties and the regular 9-5. Whilst I'm sure the day job is going to remain, now Layla is almost 15 months old, she's a lot better at things now (in particular sleeping!). Triston our 5 year old has been a legend as always and plays well with his lil sis

    Now

What are you working on right now?

Not much today, just put a lil flappy bird game on the showcase, quick lil 6 hour game dev time game with that lil penguin I'm hoping to use in a number of games in 2015.

    How's that going?
Flipping Fanatastic, Happy New Year Everybody!

    Next

What's the plan for the year ahead?
  • Make and release 12 games
  • Exercise more
  • Balance out my life a bit better.

I was originally considering posting this as a blog post, but here'll do just as well. S'been another busy year, and while I try to check in here every day I don't usually have much to say, so here's what I've been up to.

    Studies

I'm now in my third year of Computer Science at Oxford. Work progresses well, although I'm always pretty busy during term. Did well enough at the end of my second year exams, which along with my exams at the end of this academic year and a project I'm doing will decide what I get. Hoping to stay on for a fourth year after but we'll see how things go!

    Roleplaying Games

The University's Roleplaying Game Society has always been my big social activity while here, particularly with a large 50-odd-person continuous event it runs every week. I'm currently in fact in charge of the 8-person team that runs the current event, which between my course load has kept me insanely busy during term (and out of it, too!). It's a lot of fun and pretty rewarding, but takes quite a bit of effort. Not strictly relevant to the games made around these parts of course, but maybe I'll discuss it more some time.

    Jury Service!?

I got called up onto Jury Service on a longer-than-usual trial over the summer, which was unexpected. I don't see myself going into any details on what it entailed on here, but it was certainly an eye-opening and enlightening experience, if occasionally quite tedious. Of course, having done it once only gets me out of it for the next 2 years - I'll be just as likely to get picked again as any of you (UK folks) after that!

    New Computer

My laptop died right on the last day of my second year at uni, so the first few weeks of summer were spent sorting out a new machine. Decided I wanted to build my own desktop for the first time, so set about doing that, and ended up with something pretty decent. That was fun, and definitely worth it, although for the four weeks it took me to get organised in sorting it out I had no computer at all, which was agonising!

    Coding

Alas, between all the other stuff that's keeping me occupied I haven't had all that much continuous time free for any recreational coding, which really sucks. I still have various coding activities to do course-wise, and various cool ideas for my own projects floating around in my head, but in term-time I'm always too busy, and out of term I still have work to do, and often feel like just crashing and playing games after that. Easter holidays was taken up with a course project and preparing an RPG; Summer was full of not having a computer, then having a computer but needing to write an RPG and then be on a jury for ages; and this Christmas so far has had plenty of project work to do, followed by the Steam sales and general Christmas wanting-to-rest getting in the way. I'm not one for New Year's Resolutions, but hopefully I can actually find the time, and more importantly *motivation*, to do my own thing at some point in 2015! Then maybe I'll actually have something to show off around here rather than just floating.

So yeah, that's been my year. Here's to a happy, successful, and hopefully-slightly-more-codey 2015!

Sounds like things a flowing well for you, Shroomy!
You don't need to code games, religeously, to keep in touch. ..although it helps
I'd love to hear more about the RPGGroup thing.
I'm sure that, if I knew any other geeky kids at school, I'd've been in the middle of such a group.
    ... Didn't happen!!

    Ups

What did you get done this year?
  • Finish my book
  • Continue working on Project Dollhouse

Did everything turn out as planned?

Mostly, yeah. My book turned out better than planned - publisher wanted me to revise my manuscript.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Chat system for Dollhouse
  • Kill myself

    Why not?
    Time and depression, mostly.

    Now

What are you working on right now?
Project Dollhouse, revising my book and staying alive. Roughly in that order.

    How's that going?
    Slowly.

    Next

What's the plan for the year ahead?
  • Publish my book
  • Project Dollhouse
