Socoder -> Off Topic -> Weird / Crazy computer mods?

My girlfriend just found an old picture of a PC mod that I did a few years ago, so I thought I'd share it with everyone and ask if anyone else has done anything stupid to their computers.

For some reason, I decided to slice the front of an old NES, and glue it to the front of my PC. This was my pride and joy for a while, with working Power and Reset buttons, power button and two fully functional NES Gamepad ports, connected to the parallel port round the back. Allowing me to play all sorts of games, including emulated NES games with full retro goodness. Shamefully though, I no longer have this excellent piece of kit, it didn't fit in the next case I bought, so I said goodbye to it.

So, what daft mods have you guys done to your computers?

That is awesome. Apart from solderig a USB plug onto the end an XBox lead so I could play games with a pad, and covering my PC case with stickers and those little furry guys you often get for free from presentations, I've not made any real mods like this to any of my PC stuff. Although I did change the case to my USB stick to an ASDA Paracetamol box.

I havent attempted any pc mods yet. But I do have a heavily modified XBOX 1 and a heavily modified PS2. My xbox has a ring of lights around the jewel as well as a HD activity light, and a Dual TSOP mod. My PS2 has a CUSTOM made flip top lid with an external fan mounted to the top of it as the original died and the connector broke on the inside. Of course it has the psone driver memory card hack on it with home brew loaded up on it.

Now I do own an Atari 800xl that has a crap load of mods in it and my floppy drive is modified as well. This would be my closest thing to a PC mod that I have. I dont remember what all it has...256k ram upgrade and some other things....

The bastard hacked thing that is my fileserver (Comp 2).. Dremel dremel fan fan dremel dremel!

Somehow I got 3 card readers, 9 fans, and 5 hardrives into that small case, all without making the PSU explode (screw it, if it dies.. oh well.) It's also used as a media center, with my TV and cable ran through it, not mentioning the fact that it's a midi clock for an Xboard 49, Alesis SR16 Drummachine, and a Kaoss pad.. needless to say my room is a cabled mess.

Not only is it screwed up externally, internally it's used as a distributed filesystem for PSPs, where i can store all my files and access them over the net.

It's not an insane hack where my computer does cartwheels and has the engine of an F-117 hanging off of it, but it's a technical nightmare if i ever had to unplug it all...

Mog: that sounds fun. I might advise you to use wire ties to organize all your wires. I used the ties off bread bags to organize the wires on my computer.

I've only done one major hack to a computer. Our PSU died on an old computer of ours. We were able to get a new one, but the wires on the new unit weren't in the same spot, and they were all too short. So I had to splice all the wires, one by one, to fit the old connectoins with the new PSU. And happily, I got it all to work, though with a few long wires in the case.
