heh.. I just found out that my phone has a handy little feature, whereby you can forward your notes as sms messaes.
Not much, you might think, but it means I can type messages with a proper keyboard in notepad, save them to the phone, and send them off.
Saves me about 7 hours per text

So, quick question for today.. What AMAZING functions have you found on something you've owned for ages, but never known about!?

I just recently learned that ctrl + a left/right arrow moves the text cursor a word at a time.

Mine allows you to make phone calls which you cannot do on a Sony Ericcson (well the two my mate owns, of which one was only a week old).

Haha, I didn't catch that reference until you mentioned it.

I recently found that you can hold down shift+tab in Firefox to do the opposite of what just tab does.

shift tab, ctrl shift tab, alt shift tab: all do the opposite of their respective counterparts in all programs. notice that the tab key has an arrow pointing in both directions, one above the other, just like how you get different characters for hitting a number or shift+number tab is the same way.

I learned that in MS Paint, if you hold shift, you can create perfect regular shapes. IE: Circle as oppose to oval; square as oppose to rectangle.

That shift thing works with lines too, I learnt it today off my room mate.

My phone is amazing. It cost me and arm and a leg, but it's extremely nice. Haha.

End of story.

I recently found out my tracfone has an alarm feature. Useless for waking me up as its too quiet, but quite handy for reminders. Too bad the phone doesn't have a calendar, like my last one...

Another cool feature I found out, the Windows key can be used for a few shortcuts. Win+D brings up your desktop. Win+E brings up My Computers. Win+R brings up a run dialog, where you can run any recognized program.

Win+E technicallybrings up Explorer but that's just being picky.

You can also use Win+M for the desk top but the clever thing is, it doesn't just show the desktop, it Minimises all windows and you can reverse it with Win+Shift+M

One that was never really implemented was Win+C... if you had an Intelipoint mouse installed then Win+C would open up the Control Panel.

Not sure if this still works in XP because I don't think I've done it since '98... Win+V would bring up the Clipboard Viewer if it was installed. I found it by accident when I meant to Ctrl+V to paste

Scanning through the keyboard I found some that I wasn't aware of...

Win+B ... Moves focus to the Task Bar for keyboard access to the various buttons
Win+L ... Logs you off Windows (scared me for a minute when my browser disappeared!)
Win+U ... Utility Manager which gives you access to Magnifier, Narrator and On-screen Keyboard

And one not mentioned yet...

Win+F ... Opens the Find window (now renamed 'Search' of course)

My iPod stores lyrics for songs that provided them. I had no idea this was being done until a few weeks ago.

I recently discovered that MP3 files can also contain all manner of extras including lyrics and cover art. There are designated segments for things like front cover, rear cover, Band photo, Life photo, and various other photo possibilities.

So it's not so much the iPod that stores them as the software used to make the MP3 in the first place. Of course whether all the extra data stays in tact may depend on the MP3 player used.

I recently spent an evening updating my collection so it all had cover art included
I found MediaMonkey to do the job. It's a free and rather nice media player/organiser/converter.

I just found out that if you hit Ctrl+C on an error message, it copies the text to the clip board

And I just found out (by accident) that if you hold down control+shift and right click in Windows explorer, a new menu item appears in the context menu which lets you open the command prompt in that directory. Handy Don't know if it's Vista only, though.

I think it must be Vista because it doesn't do it for me in XP. I installed a little widget that adds "Open Command Window Here" the the menu when you right-click on a folder because it was something I really wanted to do a few months ago. MS obviously took it on board :amazed:

DMexBar gives you a nice single button on the window's toolbar to do the same thing. Also has New Folder, and a bunch of other useful things..
..
But yeah, good on MS for finally adding a feature that should've been in Win 1.0

I know this is an old one but I have to add to it. I just recently fount out on my blackberry that if you press the N key or P key it will scroll to the Next or Previous item that I am viewing. Its great when viewing pictures. And in videos to forwards and rewinds for it.

I only learned last year that you can hit "Backspace" in Explorer / My Computer windows to go up to the previous directory level.

It was really a "d'oh!" moment when I learned that. I felt like an idiot. D:
