Today, it's 18 years since the US/Euro releases of the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

Has it been that long? Wow.

Never could get into Sonic myself. I love the old Super Mario Bros. games, and it's neat how Mario's design was basically determined by technological limitations (i.e. he wore overalls so his arms could be distinguished from his torso). He wasn't pieced together by some focus group with the intention of creating a merchandising empire. He was basically programmer art for a (then) experimental game.

Whereas Sonic was clearly a creature of the Sega marketing machine from the start, an attempt to one-up Mario and highlight the Mega Drive's "blast processing."

Anyway, sorry to sound so negative on Sonic's birthday!
