the pound sign hatred of PHP is because it doesn’t have proper Unicode support, and £ isn’t in ASCII (unlike the dollar, which is silly)

About time! Of all languages out there, web ones especially need unicode support. I'm so glad I'm English so I don't have to worry about trying to get my own language working in PHP.

Even JS allows you to define variables and methods using unicode (as long as it's a real letter or word, in some language, somewhere).

It's not like I make functions called



just because I'm a Norwegian. For comments, I can see the issue, but even comments are nice to write in English if you want them to be understood by others.

Edit: How come the Æ, Ø and Å characters are rendered fine when I write something, but not when they are displayed in a topic?

Those were the days! Most of my games back then used the character set for the graphics. Spent many a happy hour with pads of graph paper, designing 8x8 chars then coding them into my CPC

Yeah, those were the days, I made a Cave Man/Terradactyl style game that used that used redefined chars, except my game had a space shuttle thing that you could shoot at with a rocket shaped thing at the bottom of the screen.

I had some sort of program that allowed me to make the chars on screen, it saved on producing heaps of waste paper. LOL

|edit| Shame I lost the cassettes and disks of my gamemaking attempts, that would have been such a nostalgic blast for present times. |edit|

@Afr0, agreed, you shouldn't really use it in code.

But it's like having a watch that is waterproof to a 1000 meters. I'll never take it to that depth, but it means if I ever leave it on in the bath, or take it to the beach, I can be confident it'll be ok.

Unicode's been my arch nemesis since I started doing StringyThings for Windows Smartphone, about 6/7(?) years ago.
Damn thing drove me crazy then, and still does to this day.

Uninteresting note : The newsletters haven't contained "..." for AGES! If I type that on Mac, it magically changes it to a unicode-based tripledot, and fucks up the newsletter converter..
