1. Boss gets annoyed by Norton ’’buy me!!’’ warning. 2. Jay tweets that he’s going to have to ’’fix’’ the laptop. (ie remove and put in AVG) 3. Norton tweet asking what version the trial is, so they can help with the bugs!!!! Derp...

Which is better AVG or Avast?

AVG's awfully bloated, lately.
i've not tried Avast for a long time. It's blue notifications pissed me off!!

The program was updated since you probably last saw it. It's now an Orange spinning ball.

I still use the Blue ball 4.8 Home version due to the fact that when the Avast version 6 came out it had some problem.

AVG I used but then went back to Avast 4.8 Home since Avast knows that a Keygen is not a virus. AVG just deletes them unless you travel through its menus and find the dialog that says to skip the keygens.

I never found that dialog for AVG and so . . .

I use AVG and it is indeed terribly bloated and slow compared to the way it used to be. However, I never got on with Avast.

And Norton (shudder) is worse than the viruses it's supposed to protect you from. And speaking of Norton - blogs.comodo.com/pc-security/computer-protection/what-happens-when-hype-prevails-over-science-the-norton-scandal/

I've been sticking Microsoft Security Essentials on the family's computers. It's not as bloated as Avast or AVG.

To their credit, the latest version of Norton actually uninstalls properly (instead of taking hours).

NOD32 is supposedly one of the best if you don't mind paying for it.

I still reckon NoScript and not-downloading-dodgy-programs is enough to avoid any problems.

In fairness, Norton has come a long way over the last 2 or 3 years. It's much faster, works with Windows UAC (used to require disabling it), less intrusive, and installs/uninstalls correctly (I've had Norton leave Windows un-bootable in the past).

On tests where they analyse the number of viruses a scanner will catch, Norton also gets a pretty high score.

The business version is also supposed to be excellent (and where most of their effort went over the last 10 years). However for home use, I still wouldn't use it.

Microsoft Security Essentials is what I trust. It is consistently good in all areas; it just rocks!

The only problem with Avast might be that it scans everything. You download something and its scanning it as it comes through.
You open something and it's scanning as it opens.
When it scans depending upon your settings it can slow the machine down.

I was told that Malwarebytes was good alternative to either of these due to its size, its detection and its speed.

Malwarebytes is excellent for finding problems you already have, although I don't think the free versions features any live protection IIRC? I've been using Avast instead of AVG for a while now, and it does seem to get in the way far less than AVG did. Dunno if I really need it because I never seem to have any problems, but it makes me feel a little safer.
