Yeah, I think that's as small as you can get him.

I just gave it a go myself, but the eyes need a gap, and you can't avoid it..
head, blank, blank, eye, blank, eye, blank, head.
That's 8 pixels across.. and that's as small as he can possibly be.
8x8, plus 2 for the feet, plus another 5 for the hat.
8x16, and he doesn't quite look as good as he did.

A bit smaller. Obviously you can still move the eyes down 1 pixel, but that's about it in monochrome, methinks.

Getting there, I have a new respect for old school pixel artist and the struggle to make characters look good ad such small scale, those 8bit days must have been hell.

It's not just the small scale, but also the lack of colours. With monochrome you can't add shading or anti-aliasing to make the image smoother.

Most Speccy games didn't use characters that small on the whole, so that's why pixel pushers made great things with the old 8bits - a bit more room to work with.

I'm forced in this case with a 128x64 screen, it's either tiny sprites or scrolling.
Also, you're right, it took me quite a while to start thinking in 1bit and realizing that something can look the same without actually looking the same, negative space etc.
