(from the newsletter) ''A board game is more 'Move along the various squares, events occur'''

Dude.

DUDE.

You need a serious education on modern boardgaming. I would LOVE to be the one to provide it, but being on the other side of the planet, maybe not.

I'll provide you this link in recompense: https://nonstoptabletop.com/blog/2017/7/30/the-10-types-of-board-games-everyone-should-know-about

In other news, I read the newsletter every week. Thank you for perservering.

PS: Connect Four is totesalutely a board game. Comes under the heading of "abstract strategy".

Connect Four isn't a board game, it's a two player vs battle, like battleships is.
But then so is chess, but that's definitely a board game.

It's like "the five solitaire games I've written are all card games, but they're nothing like Poker"

Dumping all the card games together is no more right than dumping all the board games together.

"Grand Theft Auto 3 is a Retro Videogame"
You just wouldn't dump it in the same category as Pac-Man, Lemmings and Super Mario Sunshine..

Maybe it's the phrase "Board Game"
.. maybe if I remove that, I can make things a bit clearer..
1 on 1 games, and Group games.. that's probably a much better way to categorise them..
Then anything like Yahtzee, being a solo game, can go into a Solo category..?
.. but then, so should the Solitaires..

Ooh, bloody hell..

"Board game" is a very broad term that doesn't necessarily require a board. If you'd like to go even MORE broadly then you can use "tabletop game", which then also includes miniature gaming, RPGs and others.

Are there sub-categories? Absolutely! But that doesn't mean that Battleships isn't a boardgame necessarily, based on the broad definition.

But that's okay. I'm happy to provide the info. If you don't like it, agree with it or are interested in it, that's okay too.

(Calling GTA3 and Super Mario Sunshine "retro video games" is a whole 'nother kettle of fish)

Yeah, I think I'll probably scrap the use of "board games" as a category name, and just let people assume that a lot of the games are board games.

That seems the best way forward.

And, yes, I know that "board games are many different things".. that's the whole reason I'm having this issue!!!
If I assume "well, that's really just a board game", then I'd end up with one section of 100 games in it.
I need to make more distinctions between them, and I'm now thinking the number of players is probably the best way to do that, rather than my old "Board Games vs Misc" that I had before.

Jayenkai, this newsletter:: My complaint wasn't that "It's NOT a board game"

Jayenkai, last newsletter:: The catagories got mangled when I first added "Four In-A Row". To me, that's not a board game.

Your honour, the defense rests.

(But seriously, it's all cool. )

"To me"
I agree that Connect Four technically "is" one.
But I still don't want to clump it alongside HeroQuest..
