Socoder -> Concept/Design -> Project Ideas

Hi guys. I've got to write a major project for computer science. I've got about 8 weeks to do it, and it's got to be in Java (yeah, i know...)

I've had a few ideas, such as a simple Database Management System (DBMS), HTTP Server, IRC client, etc...

So I was wondering if anybody else had any brilliant ideas for me? I don't really want to do a game, but I'll do one if it's the best idea there is.

Thanks.

Could we see the assignment criteria itself? The actual piece of paper (or html document) outlining what you have to do and so on?

Uhm, it probably isn't very interesting, but here goes;

Rendering! Making a program out there that'll easily support modding of games is kinda fun, and also very helpful to various games.

Some 3D rendering and animation systems that have been HEAVILY documented are, amongst others, the systems used for Quake, The Sims, Quake 2, Quake 3, Half Life (stems from Quake 2), The Sims 2 etc. etc. Due to a lack of links atm, I'll just hastily shoot in a link to a page I'm using myself atm, because I'm very interested in how The Sims renders it's meshes; www.donhopkins.com/drupal/node/20

If you want a practical example of how such a project can turn out and/or be designed, you should head over to sims.ambertation.de, the homepage of SimPE, an editor for all the fileformats used by The Sims 2 (including the compressed packaging formats).

okay.
good luck on your project.

Can't wait to hear about it...or even see it.
I hope you score a good grade...perhaps an A++
rather than a C++.

cheers,
