Socoder -> Off Topic -> about the Nintendo Wii.

I have re-read that in-depth review about the Nintendo Wii from Zonk over at Slashdot.org

and along with that... my sister and I did some Christmas shopping. Guess what..if you don't already know nor have surmised: we saw demo game on the Wii with Zelda: Twilight Princess.

oh my gosH!!! those mountain and canyon scenes and with the horse galloping across and down. And also the wolf...the wolf at the ledge of the ridge and howling. Wow!!

We also saw some other games for the Wii...such as Call of Duty, that NBA basketball game and especially Fall of Man by Insomanic Games.

I hope other adventure and role play games come out for the Wii. It would be cool if games such as Oblivion, Titan Quest, Heroes of Might and Magic V, and even Fallout 3 and Hellgate London come out or are ported to the Nintendo Wii.

I'm sorry of being so skeptical of the Nintendo Wii.
I'll be getting one but way after the ho ho ho Christmas rush and season. They are on backlogged order anyway. So early next year, I'll be getting one.

one thing: will all or most of the games work with a Gamecube of Nintendo compatible controller? Eventually, I'll probably get used to this Wiimote controller thing but I like and want to use another controller for the games as well.

sincerely,

Just a reminder, the "Canyon Scenes with the horse galloping", etc scenes from Zelda.

The Zelda game is still technically a Gamecube game, so that's not even full Wii graphics, there.

I'm sure that with the pointer being integral to the system, there's bound to be a lot of Menu based games, so expect plenty of RPG's and RTS's and things. The Pointer is REALLY easy to get to grips with.
I thought it'd take a few days, but it really didn't. It was SO easy to get the hang of!

The little speaker on the controller is actually a bit shit! I mean, I didn't expect the Moon on a Stick, but they could've tried using the DS's speakers! Unless of course, it's steaming the audio over the bluetooth signal... If that's the case, then I guess it's as good as we'll get.

One thing I've found is that the Sensor bar needs to be unobstructed. At first I put it at the bottom of the TV, under the little "Grove for no reason" that's under it. But we've a few big lumpy bits of decor in the house, and they kept getting in the way, so now the bar's on top of the telly and it works much better.

As for the Gamecube thing.. I haven't actually even plugged one in yet. (I'll let you know when I try) I don't think Commercial games are Cube-Controller compatible, but it might be more of a "Per Game" basis, rather than a console-wide rule.
I'm sure if something needed a decent controller (Smash Bros) then it could use the cube ones..

For now though, it's REALLY easy to get into

I have only tried using the Gamecube controller for gamecube games. Also even though Zelda is a GC game, you should remember in terms of power, the Wii is essentially a suped up Gamecube. Also I believe they flipped the image for the Wii version, as they wanted Link to be right handed (because people using the game would most likely be too) and flipping was far easier.

Saying that, I love my brothers Wii. Not only is the remote REALLY easy to use, I found going back to the gamecube controller to play Resident Evil 4 quite combersome. I love how both the analogue stick and the remote are seperated, all controllers should be like that. It's so much easier.

My only drawbacks are that yes the speaker is crap and second, often when you go to start pointing it can be tricky to find the screen. I would love to have one for the PC, especially with the analogue stick. It would be amazing.

The Nintendo Wii is ace and been having great fun with it for the last week and a bit.

I'm a bowling pro and slowly getting my tennis skill up now.

We only have WiiSports and WiiPlay at the moment but getting Raving Rabbids for xmas, so can't wait to play that in another week.

Good times ahead - this is the most excited I've been about a new machine since I got my ZX Spectrum in the 80s.

If I might make a suggestion to all.. Don't go for Monkey Balls.
Although 1+2 on the Gamecube are easily two of the best games on it, the Wii version is just absolutely pants!
The Party Games have almost no substance, and the actual game, strangely, doesn't suit the controller.

A better way to have done the normal game would be to have removed the "Turn Left/Right, Roll forward" thing, and stuck instead with just "Roll the ball in the direction your angling the controller" instead.
Shame really.

Rayman Rabbids is a much better collection of minigames...

I'm hoping and expecting for some really good and even great adventure and role playing games. And, for the next year too for the Nintendo Wii.

again, I'd like to see Heroes of Might and Magic V, Metal Knights(or is it Metal Hearts?), and even Titan Quest to be ported over to the Nintendo Wii.

Heck!!, if Hellgate London by Blizzard came out for the Wii...I promise you all I'll go buy the Wii and just play this sci-fi role playing game set in the future and in London, England. true!

Having experimented, I'd say the sounds are definately being streamed to the controller. That is to say, the further you get away from the console the worse the speaker gets.

Methinks there should maybe have been a small buffer in there.
Aw well.

well,

again, sometime next year...I'll be getting a Wii. Probably over at Walmart. I'll just wait for the second or even third batch of orders. Cause of all the peole waiting for it and also for Nintendo to work out any more problems with it. And hopefully, more games will come out too.

In the meantime, my Hydra is in and will be ready next week for Christmas. Also, although I have no liking for the Cobra Creator...no love lost...I'm looking forward to trying out the Cobra demo.

I will you my power mousey review.

I havn't heard of there being any problems with the Wii, except for the weak straps.

Saying that the battery life for the remotes is too short and the rumble is almost non-existant (maybe that's connected to the battery life). I do love Wii Sports and the remote is amazing, but it isn't accurate enough. Too many times I do a really fast bowl and the guy just drops it on the floor. Boxing is also ruined by the lack of accuracy.

I am posting this from the Wii! It's pretty good, but did crash earlier. I'm gonna go try the chat too.

Due to my broadband requireing me to get to this site through a proxy, and Wii Opera not being able to let me set a proxy, I am unable to post this from my Wii..

Booo!

Still, I just spent an hour messing about with the thing!

Tip : For Flash sites, hit (2) to stop all flash stuff being really teeny tiny!
Google Video, Orisinal and more, all on your telly \o/yeay\o/

(I may have to start Flash development again!)

As far as the rumble's concerned, I think it rumbles enough to be noticable, to be honest.
I'd much rather have it tapping away, letting me know boundaries and things, than having it do that silly "Vibrate for hours when turning a corner" stuff. That always annoys me!

It crashed with Google video on ours, when we tried to watch the fantastic 'La Jetee'. It also didn't recognise the remotes when we restarted, just the browser not the whole machine.

But sites generally don't look very good, you have to zoom in to read. The DC browser looked better, but it is really nice using the remote and it works brilliant.

Oddly enough the Nintendo VIP site isn't very well supported as it doesn't seem to keep you logged in.

Chat also worked perfectly, although I didn't get to talk to anyone.

Also I was playing bowling on 'Wii Sports' earlier, and I got a personal record beating 299. 11 strikes in a row, and then I miss one pin on the last try, the number 10 pin right in the back corner.

Aint it so. But for some reason I've now lost my spin, I've even been suspecting the remote is to blame (but it most probably isn't).

I also got my brother the best present for a Wii owner last week for his birthday, a battery charger with batteries.
