Best Free Antivirus?

Which is it then

I've recently reformatted my PC, and so now i'm in the spiral of reinstalling everything like a madman. So now we're at antivirus, and I shudder at how shithouse AVG 9 is. I'm tired of it blaring false-positives at me and hijacking my search results.

So here it is: What is your favorite antivirus software? I'd prefer just to run bare but Windows 7 complains incessantly about not having anything, so i'll appease the mighty windows gods to leave me alone.

So, let's have it!

To be honest, I've stuck with AVG!
You CAN turn off the annoying search thing, you know...

And, as for false positives? I'd rather be safe than have it NOT pick up a possible virus!

I used to use AVG, but the false positives put me off too. Games I've bought from the shop probably didn't come with a virus.

So I use Avast!

But the biggest protection is common sense and ensuring you keep Windowz up to date.

I've been using Avast for a few months now, no problems so far.

I haven't had an anti-virus program installed for at least two years, and have met no palpable problems. If you know what you're doing, all these programs do is slow your computer down.

Yikes...

wouldn't

I wouldn't recommend it either, but in the past anti-virus and internet security was needed to block the holes in Windowz. These days security for Windows is pretty good, it's not needed as much as it used to be.

Either that or we've all stopped using virus riddled p2p programs.

I've never really had any problems with AVG in the past, although I don't tend to get many viruses or other problems, but nor do I get false positives.

Microsoft Security Essentials is out and it works quite nicely. It is my recommendation.

If you don't trust Microsoft, Avira is also a good choice.

I've had terrible luck with Avast -- it worked on one computer, but failed to detect several viruses, and on another computer, installing it would invariably screw up Windows so badly it necessitated a reinstall.

AVG is okay. I have no strong feelings about.

MS have an annoying knack of giving very required programs away for free, then fucking everyone over and charging for it, 12 months down the line.

I do the same thing. Haven't had any problems yet.

.... How do you know, without antivirus scanning things?
Not all viruses are obvious.
You could be 95% of the world's spam!!

I haven't noticed anything suspicious. If I'm really worried I can just run the Windows Live OneCare scan off the internet for free whenever I want, which doesn't bog down my computer 24/7.

The days of finding hundreds of randomly made folders and shortcuts all over your hard disk are over. Today viruses are designed to run and only act in the background, and to do as much as they can to not draw attention to themselves.

If you use the internet then you can pretty much never say your virus free. You can only say you haven't found one.

I don't use anti-virus software. I haven't in years. And I've either been virus free this whole time, or I have gotten viruses that don't contact me in anyway, don't use up CPU power, don't send junk mail, don't track me, and don't do anything.

The secret:

Don't run files from untrusted sources. It's that simple.

If you ever get Trend Micro OfficeScan or whatever... Which isn't free...
Well, just don't get it.
My dad got it for free because the university he works at provides it, and he's installed it on every computer in the house.
But when it thinks a website is harmful, you're not allowed to go on it. There's no way to get on it other than uninstalling OfficeScan. Noooooooo because these idiots are ALWAYS right, aren't they?
No proxies.
No unharmful sites.
No sites with the word "Hack" in the name.
It sickens me.
