Aw, damnit...The start menu!!

[todo]Ordered 19/10/09, FINALLY DELIVERED 10/12/09
Feckin' took them long enough..

So, Win7-64bit. Nice!
Bit eeky, but otherwise nice.

Nice having progress bars in the toolbar. That's handy.. I can watch as Audiosurf gets downloaded!

But, FFS.. Issues.

1. Neither of my USB Ethernet connectors work, so I'm pretty much currently stuck with only 1 ethernet connector on the PC. This means, this PC's quite happy, but MY ENTIRE NETWORK ISN'T.
Balls.

Gotta go buy a router, now.
ffs..

2. Which idiot designed that stupid blocky start menu, and why the hell can't I get the old one back.

Winkey-P-I-I, used to run Internet (Chrome) P-O-B for Blitz, P-M-C for Coolplayer, etc,etc..
Now I try that, and it spend 3 weeks searching my system for some feckin' pie!!!
NO, WINDOWS, NO!!!!

3. I've got very little on the system right now, mostly due to the network not being connected.
I'll probably whinge some more later!

4. Still not happy about Vista style JUMBO REQUESTERS!!! especially when moving files around in explorer.

It's not the size that matters, it's what you do with it..

Agreed, if your talking about when you copy into folders that already have those files. I find those requests hard to instinctively read, it always takes me a second or two before I can select the option I want.

I'd prefer big symbols next to the options so when it opened again in the future I'd instinctively know the options by recognising the symbols.

I can just ignore the text.

The start menu is my biggest peeve with Win7.. it's just, argh.. Why!? "To save space"

Who f-ing cared about the start menu screen space?! SERIOUSLY ffffuuuu guy who made new start menu, you suck, burn in hell. It's terrible! At least give us the option to go back to the old one instead of forcing us into this new system, it's all kinds of messed up

Other than that I don't have too many concerns. I like it a lot better than vista, although it kind of feels like a 'Windows "We're sorry for Vista" edition'

Not like how XP didn't feel like a "We're sorry for ME" edition... But it's all good, glad to finally have a modern Windows that doesn't totally suck.

opens programmers notepad via series of clicks instead, and starts on this week's newsletter.

Ordered 19/10/09, FINALLY DELIVERED 10/12/09

Same here. I ordered like a month ago, and was finally shipped a few days ago. Should be here today or tomorrow... :X

@Start Menu:
There's probably already a uxtheme.dll crack by now. Just find a theme on Devart made specifically for that- the normal theme, with a half-decent start menu.

What exactly is the difference between the Windows 7 and the Vista start menus? I can barely recall any change at all.

|edit| Phoenix: Based on the content of the whining, they're all talking about stuff that changed between XP and Vista, not between Vista and Windows 7. Windows 7 didn't really change a whole lot - just some UI tweaks. It's still Windows, it's still unbearably painful to use, and completely inconsistent about how it wants you to do things. They may also be talking about changes to the task bar, since most people (those being the people who are wrong) don't really think of the start menu and taskbar as separate entities. |edit|

At no point did I whinge about the taskbar.
If it helps, you CAN change the taskbar back to Win95 style, but you CAN'T change the damn Start menu back!
WTF?!!

And yeah, a lot of this is XP to Vista stuff, especially that damn horrible UI for the requesters.
My god, that thing's ugly!

But, they've fixed a lot.
The "FLICKERING BLACK SCREEN THAT WILL KILL YOUR VIDEO DISPLAY" only happens if you're actually doing something you shouldn't, as opposed to happening every time you try to rename a filename in the start menu, or something like that.

Additionally, the folder views appear to be behaving themselves, and sticking to what I've asked, but without access to my other system's folders full of random content, I'm not 100% sure about that. Needs testing better

..
Win 7, Usability : It's better than Vista, but it's no XP.

Cower: In Vista you could have the classic start menu, the one that's used in XP. In Windows 7, you can't. The taskbar (not the Start Menu) was barely changed between XP and Vista. In Windows 7 it's been completely replaced by the 'super bar'.

Windows 7 has figured out that if you try to "safely remove" an external drive (thumbdrive/etc) but have the explorer window open, it should probably close the window!!

Vista REALLY struggled with that one!
Tuesday, 15 December 2009, 03:38
JL235
You should never remove an external drive without closing the explorer window and then clicking the 'safely remove hardware' icon in the try. This is especially true if you've plugged in a mechanical hard disc (or a device containing one, like a large MP3 player).

I know a guy who corrupted his mobile hard disk because it was being written too whilst he pulled it out.
Tuesday, 15 December 2009, 03:44
Jayenkai
Absolutely, but "Safely Remove" should at least have the ability to bother to close the window! Vista didn't bother, it just complained that the "device is in use!!" even if the only thing that's happening is that the windows explorer window is open. Silly Vista.

On the other hand, if you insert your USB stick into Windows 7 whilst Windows Media Player is open it'll grab hold of it with no warning. It's annoying to have to close WMP just to eject my flash drive, which I don't even want it to index or touch.
Wednesday, 16 December 2009, 05:02
Jayenkai
Simple solution, don't use WMP

I've tried not to let it run, once, just incase it decides to steal all file associations, and start playing any mp3's I happen to click, online.. AGAIN...

Oooh, Paul! 'ello again.
Welcome back from lurkyland!

Win7's definitely an improvement on Vista.
Like, WAY WAY better than Vista.
But only because they've actually REMOVED the shit stuff.
I'm yet to really come across something that makes me go "OOoooh, THAT is better than XP!!", but then I've not gone all-out on it, yet.

Now, back to the original point.
I'm (god forbid) getting used to UGLY-START, but only because it auto-selects the search bar, and I'm now just typing in the names of the programs I'm running.

*shrugs*

.. I'm pretty much ignoring the entire point of the start-menu there, but it works

@Paul:

it's a glitch- You have too many folders, try consolidating :/

My "Programs" list is always nice and neat. I make sure it is, and go around deleting the 50,000 folders that every new game seems to leave.

"Games/Gamename" vs "Publisher/Developer/PlayGame/Gamename"
ffs..

One thing I haven't mentioned that I think is a total improvement on Vista and XP is the improved taskbar. The fact that you can now have several program sessions running under one icon just makes things alot handier

Afro One thing I haven't mentioned that I think is a total improvement on Vista and XP is the improved taskbar. The fact that you can now have several program sessions running under one icon just makes things alot handier
I disagree.

First you could always bunch similar windows up together in XP.

Second that section of the taskbar, the bit that lists the apps, has always been about listing open app windows. To allow it to now include closed apps too whilst also doubling as a new quick launch bar just makes it all more confusing.
Friday, 18 December 2009, 14:45
Afr0
It's not that confusing! There's a clear distinction between the open programs and the 'shortcut-programs'.

Edit: I also realized now that you can see which icons have more program sessions in them. If you look at the Windows Explorer icon you'll see there's an extra pane behind the first one...
Friday, 18 December 2009, 14:59
Jayenkai
To repeat again, I have no issue with the way the taskbar LOOKS.. I changed it back to normal.

The issues I'm currently having are the basic usability being slightly abnormal, as if it were never tested by someone as picky as me.

Today's Gripe.
If you open a bunch of folders, then paint and notepad, you can drag them around on the taskbar, to re-arrange as needed.
BUT.. You cannot move the folders away from each other, or rearrange them, as they're inexplicably stuck together..

So, if you want to go "Picture folder, Picture program, Code folder, Code program", it won't let you do that..
Friday, 18 December 2009, 15:01
JL235
I love how similar taskbar items now huddle together. I think it's an awesome feature.
Friday, 18 December 2009, 15:03

@Jay:

Yes it will!
Just click on the icon in the taskbar that you want to maximize, and it'll pop up.
For icons that have several sessions associated with them, you'll get a small window displaying each session - just click on the relevant one.

In other words: It'll let you do it, just not in the old-fashioned way you're used to.
Friday, 18 December 2009, 15:17
Jayenkai
Slightly more exampley, because obviously, writing it out doesn't help..

I like to have things looking like this..

But I can't ..

So, after about 10 mins, I end up with a great big clump of "ALL MY FOLDERS GO HERE!!!" at one end of the taskbar. eeuw...
Can't arrange..
eeeuwww...
Friday, 18 December 2009, 15:20
Afr0
But you don't have to arrange!
That's the point.
Just click on your folders icon, and you'll get all your current folders listed in order. You can probably change the order too, somewhere....

See??
