I'm normally in favor of free speech on the internet, even when hateful. I like to think that debate and education is better then law enforcement; and I don't like the idea of people being jailed over tweeting a joke that they are going to burn down an airport.

But what this guy did is just horrific. It's not so much what he said, but how we went after the bereaved family with his posts. That is what is really sickening.

Same here Joe, I don't mind a laugh or people taking the piss, I just take the piss back.

But Aspergers Syndrome or not, he knew he was in the wrong. On the TV news programme "Meridian-Tonight", they also stated that in addition to his 18 week prison sentence, he's also been banned from using any internet chatroom/forums for 5 years. I don't think that's going to stop him though.

By going back to his ways when he gets out, he's just giving the government more excuses to pass laws for restricting the internet more and more, just because people like him choose to be a complete bunch phalluses.

How is it actually possible to ban someone from using the internet? The net can be accessed pretty much anywhere from a mobile phone nowadays.

He could appeal to the European Court Of Human Rights that they are restricting his freedom by banning access to the web, as he can claim that it's his only method of interaction (same as you can't ban a person from watching tv or listening to the radio), and that with his condition it could be viewed as discrimination against his disability.

It's a right old can of worms that now opened, the lid can't be put back on.

Gary McKinnon is also banned from using the internet while his case is pending. They can't physically stop anyone, but if they get caught then it is breach of bail, sentence or parole, then that's another trip to the cage.
