I’m not sure which looks better.

Mario Galaxy has a NES/SNES Mode in the camera, but using either just results in the 3D with colour downscaling. This kinda looks the same. It's also the issue I had with "cel shading"

Jet Set Radio and Wacky Races both look AWESOME in screenshots.
But as soon as these things are in motion, the illusion is ruined by the precision of the 3D motion, and as good as the 1bit looks in stills, it's once again wrecked as soon as it becomes obvious there's a 3D camera running it.

Add jerky movement, and keep the camera on orthogonal view, and I reckon you can get it perfect.
