I can't see this doing well any time soon. It looks so boring, it's more like a home built PC shoved inside a DVD player casing !

It might sell enough to make profit, but I don't see it being anything more then a niche. Like the GP2X.

I just can't imagine a market for it..

GP2X et-all have the whole "Homebrew!!!" market, who are least vaguely interested.

But.

This is just a pc..!

It might be good as 'a proper console for homebrew developers'. But that's still a niche.

I'd be surprised if it even moved 100 units.

All I know is they will have to try a lot harder.

In order for the idea to work, they will need to hide the fact that it's just a PC with Linux loaded on it. A gamer couldn't give a plop what it's got in it, as long as it can play great games, and the casing looks the part. They will also need a serious muttz-nutz game to launch it with, then decide to tell the consumer about the indie-dev nature later down the line.

Telling the world something in the line of "This is a Linux based console built with off the shelf parts... Oh and by the way, you can make your own games on it !", just doesn't seem the way to entice the basic gamers who don't have a clue, nor give a plop about making their own games.

Anything more than the words "Cutting edge console, with the ultimate game to play on it", is just too confusing for the beer-fueled gamer. So my advice to them would be... "Aim it at the gamer, not the indie developer. Any indie worth their saliva, only needs to read the instructions, a gamer will just go ahead and plug it in, and will probably just use the instructions as roaching material for smoking noxious substances !"

Oh wow, it plays Amiga games, and has support for "clouds" ...

Their main website www.evosmartconsole.com/, sucks so hard - look at the fucking nav menu at the top!!! THEY MADE IT PURPOSELY BLIND, why would they!? it's like playing 3 card monty with a menu, that's so retarded, not to mention the use of flash for their entire website - which i can attest is the worst decision YOU CAN EVER MAKE WEB-WISE.

This is horrible, like abysmally bad. I hope these guys crash and burn, and rabid wild dogs eat their remains and puke it on their families for possibly encouraging them to make such an ill-advised decision in life. These PC-packaged-as-Consoles are just dumb, purely dumb.

On a final note - Oh WOW! They have Tremulous, a Quake 2 meets Natural Selection (which was oddly on the Halflife engine, which we all know is quake 2 but a little better) - I'd LOVE to play that fucking game with a controller rather than the more intuitive Keyboard and Mouse for first person shooters. On their Gallery - Tremulous, an FPS.. Alien Arena, another FPS, SuperTux, a platformer, and finally The Battle Of Westnoth - a turn based strategy game - I'm wholly not impressed.

I hadn't even bothered to check their website until Mog mentioned the top nav menu. I'm impressed -- I thought that Mystery Meat Navigation died out in the mid-1990's, but I see that it's brought kicking and screaming into... well, I thought entirely Flash-based web sites also died a few years ago.

I'd comment on the games/technology, but SuperTux just makes me angry.

I just visited that site you posted, and in relation to the text undeneath where it shows that road exit sign...

"I hope that the above image demonstration makes it perfectly clear why MMN sucks more than a Kirby vacuum cleaner. It's stupid, stupid, stupid — and dangerous."

I have used one of those Kirby Vacuum systems, and trust me, if you were to look down the business end of the pipe while it is in operation, it would probably remove your eyeball !.

So that must mean that MMN, must realy f*****g suck !

So if it's open source, can I just download their OS with all the software and put it on my PC? i.e. skip the console bit.

I might e-mail them and ask.

This is just a re-branded computer. End of story.

That's what happens when you hire a crappy web developer.

On another note, don't diss the cloud man! The cloud is our friend.

I'm gonna presume it wasn't done by a professional web designer, but rather a standard programmer who works there. This goes back to the ancient rule that programmers don't make websites.
