Wow. I was just searching around the net for information about the AIM (AOL Instant Messaging) protocol, named OSCAR (Open System for Communication in Realtime), and found out through Wikipedia that it has gone opensource!
Not only that, but it is heavily documented, contains libraries for nearly every popular language in existence and as far as I can tell doesn't even require you to release your sourcecode!
This is totally awesome! Definately going into Afr0 Messenger.
Heck, someone (maybe Jay? ) should make a decls (or whatever it's called, I can't remember) file so Blitz can utilize the C++ library.

Edit: Did I forget to mention that this is absolutely ideal for anyone keen on making an application for this month's compo? Heck, you could probably even implement your own (rough) UDP-layer from scratch in time for the deadline.

haha...I'm open source!

Hopefully it's not branched too much though otherwise we could have a lot of slightly different OSCAR's.

I think open source is good for the development of some applications, but I don't think it is automatically a good thing. There are plenty of bad open source projects which are easily trounced by their proprietry counterparts.

Plus sometimes what people actually want is an open standard, not open source.
