Socoder -> Art and Sound -> Good Diagram Drawing?

I plan to make some diagrams to describe one of my projects and so I was wondering if anyone recommends any good software for drawing diagrams. Either something for UML or that is simply good at manipulating lines, boxes and text.

At work I normally just use PowerPoint but I don't have it on my machine at home. I also don't intend to buy MS Office when I only want one of it's apps, and it's too big for my eee. OpenOffice is also a no for the same reason. When I've tried GoogleDocs it's always been nice but too simplistic.

I'm looking for something free, but am open to paid for alternatives as I might buy it in the future. I probably don't want an art package like GIMP.

I was thinking of something more pretty and sophisticated, but for quick and dirty diagrams that is damn good.

You probably already know this, but I advice you not to pay for MS Visio. It's such a pain

I've heard things about Dia. Neither good things nor bad things, mind you -- just things.
