QOTD : What's the best bit?!

For me, it's the point at which the code and graphics suddenly becomes playable. That point where you can start jumping around in the game, or steering the car for the first time. Even without a real level or world for the game to exist in, it's suddenly something that's Gamey!

For me it's the point where you can look back on it and think "That's a good piece of work. I'm very proud to show it to people." This is compounded when you look back over a project and see all the different changes you made, the bugs your overcame and all the stuff you built.

And when you find yourself playing rather then testing a game, when your building it.

The point when you've got the framework in place, and are fleshing it all out. Fleshing out is easy and fun; the greatest hurdle always seems to be starting out...

Hm.
There are two points I like in particular, which are when you've finally managed to hunt down that illusive bug that's been gnawing you in your sleep for the past week and a half and when you've actually finished a game and submitted it to Socoder and your blog and people can see the result of your work.
That's also a bit annoying though, because the moment you do that more bugs tend to show up that you didn't know existed before and then you have to go back and fix them.

Edit:
I think to a point coding is more of an obsession for me than a pleasure, but it can be really nice to just sit down and code if you're really depressed and just want to take your mind off things.
In that respect it can be almost better than drugs.

I think after you eventually overcome a challenging problem in the code, which you haven't been able to work out how to do for a long time.

Sometimes, the answer has come to be in bed and I've switched my computer on late, just to write psuedo-code or detailed notes so i can remember it in the morning.

I used to keep a pad next to the bed for that exact thing. I also get alot of ideas in the shower.
