I've never really compared the two.

It depends what you're compressing, but rar is generally better.
Is 7zip a branch of zip or something completely separate?

The big advantage of .zip files is that they can be opened in windows without any extra software. If this is important, then 7zip does some of the best .zip compression.

WinRar has specialized routines that can outperform 7zip for some multimedia files. Historically it was used because it could split archives, but other software can do that too now.

For everything else, 7zip .7z archives are better. 7zip is free as well.

Zip is also slightly faster, which is essentially why rar compresses to a higher standard (it does more work to get there).

Personally I just use zip, because I don't really care about the extra few kb's. However it's worth it for large files if you are archiving. If your going to email this to someone, definitely use zip!

7zip is a new variation of zip which out performs and usually compresses better than zip or rar. As mentioned 7zip is free, and it also decompresses .rar's, bzips, tars, zips as well.

Thanks Andy.

You post that had the information about 7Zip answered the other question that I was going to post.

I'll try 7Zip then.

Most email servers I encounter refuse zip attachments, actually. For email I'm generally forced to use rar.

I use 7zip too on Windows, though, when it comes to the format of choice, mine is zip too (Because of the built in Windows zip software)

I completely removed winZip.

I'm taking the advice of Andy and the others that posted.
It seems to be able to cover, or open, most of the rest which should be enough.

Winzip kept opening with a dialog that kept asking for the upgrade.
Then it kept switching the order of the continue box.
That's an odd thing to do and can get on a persons nerves.
