Lets ignore that crappy shitty un-ordered disorganised pile of crap Top 100 none-list, and make our own!

List your top 10 favourite games, in order, with 1 being the best.

Rule # 1 : You can't pick multiple games from the same "family", so if you pick Manic Miner, you can't also have Jet Set Willy, and Afr0 only gets to pick Sims once..

Rule # 2 : Any system, any era, any game, go nuts.

Rule # 3 : Give us a brief reason for each.

1. Manic Miner - I still haven't ever completed this! One day I will, but at no point will I ever tire of making my way through the few levels that I can manage!

2. Frontier : Elite II - I spent FAR too many hours playing this during my Amiga days. If I hadn't been playing Frontier, I'd probably be a half decent developer, by now!

3. Ultima Online - Similar to Frontier, this game sucked hour after hour away from me! Playing it on a home-server meant I could go a little crazy, and soon my towns were littered with old College Teachers, and other random characters.

4. Viper Racing - An odd selection, perhaps, but a fun, silly, and often amusing game, much like Motocross Madness, but in a car that you could quite literally smash into the size of a small cube!

5. Future Cop : LAPD - The spiritual successor to the Desert Strike games. It took a while before I got to grips with it, but once I started to play its great little RTS-esque multiplayer mode, I was hooked.

6. Blockbusters - Me and my sister spent hours playing this on the Amstrad. Each player had their own buzzer, then had to actually type in their answer, instead of having some stupid lame-ass multiple choice thing come up. A great rendition of the quiz. Shame you don't get games like this, anymore.

7. Lemmings II - Never once have I ever actually played Lemmings II seriously. I ALWAYS started my game by clicking the four corners, anticlockwise, until it started to go "Let's Go!", thus activating the cheat mode! Maybe I oughta play it properly?

8. Space Hawks - This game was as tough as nails, but Uncle Jimmy could whoop it's arse, and I always struggled to get anywhere near his highscores. Grrr!!!

9. Crazy Taxi - Nothing says "Arcade at Home" quite like this. It captured the spirit of Arcade gaming perfectly, with its nice short gameplay sessions, and it's fantastic choice of soundtrack. Dreamcast-era, as short as it was, was fucking fantastic!! Long live SEGA!

10. Zero Tolerance - If I'm completely honest, replaying this game reveals it to be a bit shit! But back in the days, this was fantastic, and one of my favourite features was the fact that it streamed its levels. The game is basically a cheap Doom knockoff, where you fight your way up a towerblock, killing off everything along the way. The first couple of levels, the streaming technology isn't noticeable, since each level ends with you in the elevator, heading up a level.. But once you hit level 4/5/something, you end up having to use the stairwell, and it's here that it's made obvious. You can go back down again! Everything is one continuous level, and you can run around this giant towerblock willy nilly. Nicely done, especially on the hardware (Megadrive)

Sorry Jay, I really can't put these into any particular order as I love them all.

1. BoulderDash Construction Kit (CPC). An infinite amount of levels with a few button clicks. CPC version could do slime AND amoeba in the same level. Suck on that C64!

2. RoboCop (arcade). The best film license game ever (except for my next choice). Walk and gun your way through Old Detroit taking out all the trash and the boss of OCP.

3. Lego StarWars Complete(XBox36O) More fun than Lego AND StarWars. Even JarJar isn't too annoying. Ok, I lied - he is!

4. OutRun (arcade). The best driving game ever - until OutRun 2 came out.

5. Impossible Mission (MasterSystem). "Destroy Him my robots". A puzzling platform adventure game or is that an adventure platform game with puzzles? It's all a massive bundle of fun.

6. Pikmin 2. Like Command & Conquer with veggies. Only 10x better. Surely to be bettered by Pikmin 3

7. Luigi's Mansion (GameCube). A really funny cartoon that you can actually play. Shame it was so short, but finding all the secrets ensured multiple play-throughs and the reversed mansion was strangely tough.

8. Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii). Best Zelda game ever, although I wanted to kill the bitch when she threw me off the world!

9. Picross 3D (DS) Over 300 puzzles in the palm of your hand. A simple concept, excellently implemented and addictive as crack cocaine, even when completed. Just one more go...

10. Guru Logic Champs (GBA). Another puzzler that will wrap your brain in knots for ever.

I can't put them in order but still a good list of retro games.

WORMS. PlayStation: The kind game that should only be 2D and is best played by 4 beer-fueled players.

Manic Miner. Amstrad CPC: Created from mad genius, a top cult game that is self justified.

Mutant Monty. Amstrad CPC: I know I've been saying this for a while but I really need to get my arse in gear an do a remake of this coz nobody else has.

DATASTORM. Amiga: Defender on ACID.

Roland In The Caves. Amstrad CPC: Had a lot of fun playing this but never got very far coz I was always getting caught by that beaky bastard bird.

Bounder. Amstrad CPC: A crazy game with a bouncing ball and an excellent soundtrack.

Wizball. Amiga: A game with a wizard, inside a ball, with a major headache and a cat in a flying saucer.

IK+. Amiga: Who pulled down my pants?.

SILKWORM. Amiga: The faster you tap the fire button, the faster it shoots but fuck me did it make my wrist hurt!.

Catch'Em. Amiga: Go around catching monkeys and have fun doing it.

Those are all really great games Steve (except ROITC!)

Roland In The Caves. Amstrad CPC: Had a lot of fun playing this but never got very far coz I was always getting caught by that beaky bastard bird.

I really fucking hated that bird/pteranodon! RITC is actually Bugaboo on other formats. I swear that it's physically impossible to beat level 2 on CPC.

  • UFO: Enemy Unknown, Amiga - many of the games I am picking are pretty simple, but very well implemented. This is one of them. The world strategy aspect is pretty small, but is surprisingly deep. The missions are straight forward, but surprisingly detailed (the aliens even spawn in areas relating to their tasks). Very impressive for the Amiga, and I spent weeks playing this to death.
  • Monkey Island 2, Amiga - Monkey Island was awesome, but after melee island, it kinda goes down hill. The sequel however was funny, entertaining and had excellent gameplay in it's own right, through out the entire game. It was MK 1, but far more polished, and the best title of it's genre.
  • Deus Ex, PC - a fine example of mixing intricate, and a deep story line, without going over the top (or at least not too quickly). Also of mixing different genres in ways that complement each other; where RPG and FPS go hand in hand. Most of all, the expert level design. There was a quote by Warren Spector where he said if you are not using all 3 dimensions, in every level, all the time, don't bother building it as a 3D game. Tonnes of FPS titles fail to follow this rule.
  • Final Fantasy 8, Play Station 1 - from that golden age of well polished modern console RPGs, whilst others like FF 7, 9, 6, 10; I like 8. I find it has the most replay value, the best told story line (FF 7's is too fuzzy if you try to run through it), and I loved the setting.
  • Shining Force 2, Mega Drive - heavily underrated, and not played enough. Like Goldeneye and UFO Enemy Unknown, it's a simple game, both a simple RPG with a simple tactics combat system. Being well polished, and detailed, is what made this brilliant to play through every time I've picked it up.
  • Metal Gear Solid, Play Station 1 - I still maintain the first solid game is the best of the series. The mechanics were fun, story was deep, acting was excellent, whilst cut scenes didn't go on for 4 hours. It didn't get too over the top with conspiracy theories, and rants on patriotism and philosophy, making the story more gripping and believable.
  • Shenmue, Dreamcast - there has been no other RPG that has ever been quite like Shenmue, no cheap clones, or well polished alternatives. It stands alone as an amazing experiment at making a modern RPG, set in modern times, that tried to be realistic and as detailed as the modern world. Of all games I'd like to see made, Shenmue 3 is top of my list.
  • Goldeneye, N64 - this game requires no explanation on why it is on this list.
  • Phantasy Star Online, Dreamcast - whilst it claimed to be an MMO, it was really a tiny online dungeon crawler. Like most of the others on this list, it's a very simple game, well executed. I played over 400 hours on this game, which is impressive, considering it only has 4 levels.
  • Myth The Fallen Lords, PC - one of the best RTS games ever produced, being fun and innovative, and benefited from having no base mechanics at all. It is one of the few RTS games that forces you to use strategy and tactics to complete the single player, rather than endlessly building units and sending them in.

Crazy Taxi is a nice choice Jay, I spent hours playing that. It was the very definition of an arcade game.

@Steve, I used to play the sequel to Wizball, Wizkid, on the Amiga! There is an awesome bit where you go inside a volcano, and find a toilet. Using it causes the volcano to shoot out poo into the sky! You just don't get that kind of stuff in games today.

Although I saw Wizkid advertised in the Amiga mags I never got around to playing it, I was spending too many hours at work at the time. Maybe it's time for me to dig out an emulator and discover what I missed.

1. The Sims Online - why the hell else would I spend nearly two years remaking it?!

2. World of Warcraft - I spent wayyy too much time playing this game.

3. Mass Effects - I can't decide which one, they're all good!

4. Sim City 3k - My favourite Sim City.

5. Grand Theft Autos - Same as above, but I'd say that GTA IV, Chinatown Wars and Episodes From Liberty City kinda comes out on top, since they're the only ones I completed.

6. Max Paynes - Ditto.

7. AoE - These are the best RTSs, no doubt! But AoM was also great!

8. Monkey Islands - Obvious!

9. Sonic - there are too many, but this will always be my favourite.

10. Mario Galaxy

Edit: I changed spot number 8 - it is clear to me now that the MI games have occupied A LOT more time of my life than any of the Guitar Heros...

I had WizKid, but I never GOT WizKid. Was there an actual aim to the game or was it just to go around doing silly things? It never made any sense to me at all. There is another bit in the game featuring toilets (urinals IIRC) that I vaguely remember. |edit| just watched the vid. Yep, that was it. Bonkers. I always felt I wasted £30 with that game and that there was something special in there that I just wasn't seeing. I've never known anyone else that understood it either.

As for X-COM/UFO - I'm actually re-playing that for the umpteenth time on my Pandora right now (I started on the Amiga version too - even with a second drive disk swapping was a bitch!). I really should have included that in my list, but that would have meant losing one of the others.

Having to choose only ten games was sooooo hard.

They're here already. I'm sick of them using mind control on my soldiers!

I'm currently struggling having cocked up the level I'm on, which coincidentally has Ethereals (and they have Blaster launchers). I launched a blaster bomb into a huge ship right over the lift entrance. It blew all the doors up so I can see in all four directions at the top of the lift shaft. However the blast also blew the floor away around the lift so I can't move out into the corridors; I just fall to the floor below. And there's at least one Ethereal with a launcher up there, which I can't see... Bugger!

Ah, the joys of UFO. It sounds like a supply ship, and so yes, you have messed that level up.

You could leave someone up there, and just hit skip turn for about 10 minutes to see if you get lucky.

You could also try shooting through the floor from underneath with heavy plasma rifles. You could also use any holes to throw up alien grenades. However that's a lot of firing, so I'm not sure how well that will work.

1. Final Fantasy 8 - My favourite of the series by far
2. World of Warcraft - given the second spot because of the amount of my life it has occupied
3. Left for Dead 2 - for getting me through Uni
4. Kid Chameleon ( Sega ) - possibly the most difficult game I have ever played
5. Unreal Tournament ( 2k4 )
6. Portal
7. Skyrim
8. Mario (Super Mario bros 3 )
9. Mario Kart
10. Minecraft

Of course, Portal! How could I possibly have left that out! Silly me!! I've also since realised that I also left out WarioWare, too, which is bloody disgraceful on my part. Tsk, tsk. Shame on yourself, Jayenkai!!

Portal was my first "Sit down and finish a game without moving" at Uni. Mind you - it's like a 3 hour game first time through so that's not saying much but it started a precedent...

Ah, the joys of UFO. It sounds like a supply ship, and so yes, you have messed that level up.

It was actually a Battleship. And luckily I had a save file one step before I blew the floor away and managed to nail the bastards!

I'm a veteran at XCOM, so I've done all of your suggestions before in previous games - sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Most of the time it's just luck that saves your arse!

So phew!

I got to about Level 17 of Portal before realizing that while I LOVE puzzle games, I didn't enjoy Portal. It was a chore to play.

Taking on Battleship Ethereals is pretty damn far in! Even with one of the easier races, Battleships can take a lot to beat.

However I'm surprised you don't have flying suits by then.

I do have flying suits, but stupidly none of the bunch I took in had any - never occurred to me that I would need them. I have 5 bases and manufacturing was based solely on providing Avenger craft. Most of my men have power and personal armour and none in that group had flying armour. That was a mistake I shan't be repeating!

1. Tetris - I don't need to justify this.

2. Sam & Max Hit the Road - Steve Purcell would pretty much just have to say the word and I'd give him my firstborn. This game has had a profound and lasting impact on my idiolect. Grim Fandango would also be in this list were it not for the "family" restriction - it's another game that should not be missed.

3. Super Mario Brothers 3 - The greatest platformer ever made, bar none.

4. Fallout 3 - it was a really close call between this and Skyrim, but I'm giving Fallout 3 the advantage because I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic scenarios. Also, it doesn't report the amount of time I've been playing back to Steam correctly, so I have no idea how much time I've played that game, whereas with Skyrim, it's staring me in the face that I'll never, ever get those 120+ hours of my life back. I have a problem, okay

5. Pokemon Gold - I was exactly the right age for these games when they came out, and the older ones are still extremely satisfying games. I never caught them all.

6. Secret of Mana - One of the greatest RPGs from the SNES-era.

7. Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - This was always my favorite Zelda for some reason.

8. Katamari Damacy - Not that We can remember very clearly, but We were in all Nature's embrace. We felt the beauty of all things, and felt love for all. That's how it was. Did you see? We smiled a genuine smile.

9. Street Fighter IV - I enjoy fighting games, although I'm not actually any good at them. This one was nice.

10. Mario Party 2 - I recall playing this with friends and having lots of fun, even though it's mostly an extremely prolonged coin flip. That having been said, I always have a hangover the next morning so I'm not sure how much credit I can give the game itself.

The Pokemon games are strange beasts - you know that they shouldn't be fun (being very, very repetitive and you need to explore every nook and cranny) and that they were written for kids, but they are just soooo addictive.

I've played through a few of them (not collecting them all, but trying damned hard) but my fave was Pokemon Yellow. I just really liked being followed around by Pikachu and collecting the monsters from the cartoons (yeah, I admit it, I liked them too - my son was very young at the time and we watched them together).

I don't really like the latest monsters though - a bit too far out for me and I can't remember or pronounce their names!

Thousand Year Door was indeed ace - but all the Mario RPGs (inc Paper Mario and Mario&Luigi) are excellent.

1. Command and Conquer 3
2. Portal 2
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. CounterStrike: Source
5. Super Mario World
6. R.U.S.E
7. SimCity 2000
8. Oddsworld: Abe's Oddysee
9. Minecraft
10. Grand Theft Auto 3

I think these games speak for themselves. (I don't have time to describe why I like them.)

In no particular order:

1. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Because it's a masterpiece.

2. Bubble Bobble (NES) - Good memories playing it with my older cousin when I was five or so. I beat the final boss for the first time last year! ...I'm 22 now.

3. Freelancer (PC) - Space! Open world, customizable ships, and great storyline too.

4. Megamania (2600) - One of the first games I owned. Like a fast paced Space Invaders where you piloted what looked suspiciously similar to the Enterprise.

5. Keystone Kapers (2600) - My grandma owned it. I use to play it in her kitchen on a little black and white portable television. She finally let me take it home and I was amazed when I saw the colors for the first time.

6. Minecraft (PC) - I like to build things and I like to explore.

7. Ice Hockey (NES) - Best sports game ever made.

8. Morrowind (XBox) - So I had the XBox version which has the longest loading screen in gaming history. But aside from that, the game wad gorgeous and had endless hours of exploration.

9. Pokemon Red/Blue (Gameboy) - Because I grew up in the late 90s/early 2000s.

10. Warcraft 2 (PC) - The only RTS I ever really got into. So many hours spent on BattleNet. Yes m'lord.

having spent most of my life with a keyboard in my hands this is going to be difficult.

I will ponder this ultimate of questions and get back to you

#1 half life - needs no introduction, excellent story telling, action and suspense. Spawned a new era in PC gaming.
#2 Baldur's Gate - I guess this is the nerd in me, again good story and characters you care about. The actual game design itself was polished and very little in terms of patches were released.
#3 Diablo 2 - The hours I have spent on this game alone is insane, I used to have 72 hour long games with my brother and friend all on the same LAN game. The replay-ability alone kept me interested in this.
#4 Sonic - my fav was sonic 2, probably fuelled by the hype and partly because my dad had a game shop and I got to play it the day before release.
#5 Battlefield 3 - For its flaws, there are a couple but that's EA for you, it is a fantastic game. To date I have clocked up 244 hours and 26 minutes in its 1 year of release, not a huge amount compared to some people I know but I work and have a life to live also. The interaction between players is key to winning. no single player unless cheating can influence the battle (this is multi-player, the campaign is weak) that much.
#6 Shining Force - as a series I love the style, game play and storyline.
#7 Need for speed Porsche - lovely drives in the country side in a classic Porsche.
#8 Command and conquer - spawned a genre in RTS games, I guess you could say Dune 2 was first but who cares.
#9 Kerbal Space Program - Not played it much but the speed in which this is moving is impressive, the detail you can go to to get your little kerbal to the mun and beyond is insane.
#10 Kinect Adventure - ground breaking tech with simple games, great for parties and other fun game and gets you a little fitter in the process. However it is not the way I would play every game, i game to relax not exercise!
