But being silently celebrated! We've now got fuckloads of "other" financial crap to take care of, starting with the fact that we no longer have any insurance!

Still, with that finally out of the way, that will presumably free up some money for dealing with the other stuff, right?

Probably not. We're not sure exactly what'll happen to my mum's income support, now that she no longer has the mortgage to pay. Knowing the council, she's about to lose a crapload.

Income support doesn't take account of the mortgage, does it? It's based purely on (dis)abilities IIRC. It shouldn't change.

Housing benefit covers the cost of renting. Wonder if it would have helped with the mortgage? Dunno.

Look into DLA - Disability Living Allowance - that can really help with topping up your benefits as well as Direct Payments which can be used for purchasing support in identified areas.

Today we received the "You've paid off your mortgage!" letter!
Mum wanted to frame it, but then noticed at the bottom of the first page, a small "We've charged you a £1 admin fee" bit...
.. Mortgage is NOT paid off. We still owe them a quid.
The cheap bastards!!!

Yaaaay! (for you) and Booooo! to the bank. Wonder why they did that? At least it's only a quid for admin - most banks charge far more than that.

All paid off, lovely letter, pile of paperwork including all the deeds, land ownership, and all sorts of other gubbins.
Huge pile of paperwork! Gonna be fun sifting through it all!

Congrats

We've got ten years to go...

Are you going to put the deeds etc into a safety deposit box?

Dunno, sounds like a good idea, but they spent the night with mum, as she lay in bed, reading through all the masses of paperwork, enjoying all the lovely historical facts about our house!

Cool

I'm counting down the days until my mortgage is paid off. Only five more years... :S
