Socoder -> Off Topic -> Next Gen is HERE!

Considering we're all coders and gamers, there's not exactly a rip-roaring amount of chatter going on about the fact that this very month, two brand new super-consoles will be released.

XBone and PS4 are due this month, and gamers everywhere are shrugging their shoulders and wondering what the point is, anymore.

Is there a point?

Considering I just paid £200 for a PS3 with GTAV, and quite frankly, that's impressed the shit out of me, why would I now want to pay twice that amount for a new console that doesn't appear to have any interesting games on it!?

It used to be that a console launch would have a good 3 or 4 titles attached. A nice ample selection of games, with enough variety for everyone.
But this generation.
Damn, it sucks..

If it's not a generic FPS, or another sodding FIFA game, then it's not on the console.
"Be generic, or go home" seems to be the general preferred methodology of these two.

Am I just getting too old and grumpy?
I don't think I am, because I'm still having a whale of a time with AGameAWeek, and playing all these lovely iOS games, too. Interesting gameplay isn't "gone", it's just moved away from the consoles, and I don't think I give a crap anymore.

Ho-hum..

PC gaming master race!

You're right though. The new consoles are hella expensive, and what's on them to make it worth it? I'm tempted by the PS3+GTAV bundle but we'd have to get a new TV too (ours is still a CRT) and that's not cheap either.

Took me a good couple of years to convince Mum that it was time for a TV Upgrade! .. If the old telly hadn't finally started to go "a bit wobbly", we'd probably still be watching it's 42" Standard Definition picture! How silly!!
(For reference, that's a pixel density of "pixels that are about 1.8 times larger than those of an Amstrad CPC doing Mode 1"...! Yikes!!)

Spent a bloody fortune on tech, this year.
.. Although, to be fair, I haven't been able to go out, so I've spent the cash on bugger all else! But, still... I wouldn't spend it on these new consoles. There's nothing in it for me, and I really don't seem to give a rats arse about either of them.

I'm usually an early adopter, but I'm waiting this time around. Once there's a price cut and several games actually worth buying I might jump on-board the next-gen ship. Until then I'm more than happy with what I have now.
