Socoder -> Basic Basement -> Is Nuclear Basic Dead?

Fri, 04 Apr 2014, 16:15
Hotshot
Just been reading Nuclear Basic forum and it is not looking good at all. Some people on Nuclear forum are saying it seem like dead product which is a shame because it could be Blitz 3D 2!

There is lesson for anyone who buy products so early thinking it looking good but not thinking what happen in long term if he going carry on for next 5 or 10 years

I mean Look at Purebasic who still going strong since year of 2000! So impressive!

Will Monkey X be there next 10 years? Who Know!

So by looking strong Programming language Products would be

Purebasic
GLBasic
ThinBasic
Darkbasic pro(they have been round for ageee and programming language of itself is horrible but very well support on their forum if you ever get stuck!)

AMOS hasn't been updated in decades, but I could still use it to churn out an Amiga game.
As long as Microsoft don't completely knacker your ability to use the language to make a game, if you're comfortable using it, there's no terrible downside to using older methods and languages. Just as long as you're aware that it's no longer supported, and you're pretty much on your own.

I went to the web site for the first time and it does look good.
Initially it does look better than B3D which could only be due to the demos and screenshots that are used as samples.

Going by the forum I would say it looks pretty nuked, but a dead forum doesn't necessarily mean a dead product, the ability to purchase still seems to be intact.

You're right Steve.

But HotShot is right, the product could have been as good as B3D.

I thought that freebasic might have kept moving alon but it did not.

Congrats to Fred at Purebasic though

Does anyone ever really buy a software, hardware or consumer product and think of it as a long term tool? Surely most people buy it for what it does (or says it does) right now. Promises of things to come are always that. They are just hopes that may or may not be realized.

Of course there are also people that buy products and leave them in their packaging - either because they hope that they will be valuable in years to come or they just plain forget about them or have no time to use them.

However...

If the product does what you want it to do, then that's all that matters? At some point all software products go beyond their use by date as platforms change or OSs make the software unusable.

Investing in old languages can still reap rewards - people are still coding in Z80 Assembler on Sinclair Spectrums and Amstrad CPCs etc. and still creating great games/apps (some even doing things better than the originals or coming up with stuff that people would not have dreamed of back then).

NB may or may not be dead, but what remains seems to have struck a chord with many and it seems that it is still obtainable and usable.

What does the syntax look like compared to B3D?

Thanks for that link Kuron.

Someone is even wrapping the B3D commands into NB.

Wow!

** It's essentially nearly the same language

I think the people there stole some of B3D thunder when they put the B3 commands in to the program.

https://forums.nuclearglory.com/index.php?tid=4944

Should there be some kind of Intellectual property protection against doing something like that since NB could take all of B3ds customers.
