Well, she's complete, been on the hunt for top deals on components from ebay and managed to bag this little setup:-

For... £230 in total!!! yay

Obviously thats just the base system, not including keyboards, mouse and that as I already had these... All in all... Bloody grand!

The whole show is this:-

Windows 7 64bit (OEM)
Phenom x3 710 2.6GHZ tri-core processor
Asus motherboard (M5A78L-M/USB3)
Vengeance 4GB Ram ddr3 1600MHZ
Gigabyte HD 7950 (3072 GDDR5)
500W power supply
Heat sink fan
Case
Case fans
Fan controller
500GB HDD
DVD RW

Obviuously bits and bobs came together, like, there was a DVD and PSU in the cheapo case, but, the PSU was 500W which is what I was after, the processor/RAM came with the board... All in all... I've been digging and scouring for months getting all this together and shes all whirring away nicely!

Gonna nab some more system RAM in the next few weeks... Yummy!

Me new toy! hehehe

Only 4Gb would be my worry, but otherwise looks nice and usable.
Actually, the only time I really make use of my 8Gb ram is when I'm doing video stuff, except now all that's done on the Mac, instead, so.. Um.. Yeah, that's pretty much wasted, now!!!

As long as a system can run SpikeDislike3, it's good enough for me!

Yeah, it'll do for now, there's a 4gig stick in there but I'll keep my beady eyes open for an 8gig one so that'll bump it up to 12 with 2 slots still available (I think... I've never actually looked, lol)

All in all... Just goes to show you can still get your money's worth from the auld eBay if you try!

I've just plopped it all together tonight, but everything is grafting as far as o can see, the fans are all spinning... And when I say all... There's 6 of the buggers in total in there... I'm surprised it doesn't take off!!!

That should help any overclocking shenanigans if and when I need to get a bit more out of the system... In the bios though, there's no option to unlock the 4th core on the phenom, again, I may down the line update the bios as I'm pretty sure you can do this, then we'll see if if the 4th core is a duff or not... At the minute, it's no big deal!

Oh, cheers Dave matey, save me faffing with eBay again... I'm actually getting sick of the app now, but, it's been bloody handy!

Hehehe I'll be absolutely distraught if SD3 didn't run on it!

Oh, lovely... Basically I'm not planning to overclock anything yet which, if I was doing it now then that may of knacked it up... But no matey, that would be terrific... How much do you want for the little fellas?

Nice Dabz!

Your the only person I know which has an AMD CPU

£230 for a complete setup ain't bad, about 18 months ago I paid £320 just for my motherboard bundle alone. My complete setup was just under £650 to build, I saved up quite a while for that.

Here's my specs. It's OK, but I wish I had saved longer and got an Intel i7 instead. I plan to get a SSDrive at some point, maybe that'll prevent the browser from hanging sometimes.

Motherboard: ASUS M5A78L-M USB3
Processor: AMD Bulldozer FX-8320 8-Core @ 3.5GHz
RAM: 16GB 1600MHz
HDD: 2TB (Can't remember what make and model, haven't opened the casing for a while and probably has mousies living in there by now).
DVD Rewriter (Can't remember what make and model)
600 Watt PSU (as far as I remember)
Cheap CiT Goblin Tower.

Wow! Another AMD CPU! They are coming out of the woodwork!

You guys got an SSD? For me the SSD is the best PC upgrade in the last 15 years anyone can make! If you havent got one... GO GET ONE!!!

Not yet, but I do plan on getting one once I figure out which make is best and the cost. There seems to be a lot of mis-information on the web, I'm trying to be careful not to accidently buy a lemon.

I've got a Samsung 830 256GB a year or so ago its been the best thing since sliced bread

But yeah do your research! Check out this Whirlpool thread (its an Aussie site, but the info is still good ):

If I went new and pulled out all the stops I would've went with an i7 as well, the phenom is good enough for me right now, the reason I took the junk yard build route is that I've been running on a laptop for a bit now (well, since I left the wife), and it's getting a bit clunky, and I've been meeting a lass and spending quite a lot of time at hers so couldn't really justify blowing a fortune on a git top of the range PC build as it will spend quite a bit of time sitting there doing nowt, but when I am in the house I need something with a bit more vavavoom when I'm playing nice and this will do the trick!

And as SSD goes, would love one, but again, couldn't really justify the cost for what it will be used for so a good auld fashioned HHD will be fine!

Look at me, all grown up and that... 15 years ago I would've just thought sod it and got a provi loan and bought one far to hefty for my needs! I'd probably be still paying it back now! lol

Yeah, got to update that Steve me auld fruit!

I have an AMD too (laptop GPU) - AMD Radeon HD 7600G

I'm not really a pc gamer - I've always preferred console/handhelds. Most of the pc games I do play are casual or puzzle games anyway, so graphics horsepower is of no importance.

Mmm, yeah, Samsung EVO 850 is the way to go in terms of SSD, best upgrade for any system. I have an old AMD A6 Running at 2.1Ghz in my home PC, similar one in my old works PC, undecided whether to boost the home PC up with a 3Ghz A8 faster ram and an SSD, orrr just buld a new PC in a few months time instead. It's lasted 3-4 years but is fairly slow despite an SSHD in there for the moment.

My laptop is (*spit*) Intel Inside, but my desktop that hasn't been switched on for a good year or so is an AMD.

Is there any difference, anymore?
Everything's so buried under mountains of OS and Drivers, there's barely any software that has issues, due to CPU, anymore!

Going by comments above, I take it that it would be better for me to go SSD then?; would the cheaper "240GB" be enough?

I would still use my current drive as extra storage.

"woohoo look at me I got a SSD"

I had one of them once, it was a bit embarrassing when I went to GUM clin... Oh, erm, *cough*, yeah, just... carry on fellas!

I spotted a few 1TB Samsung 850 EVOs on ebay for less than £255, probably be sold out by the time I get the cash though.
