The Amstrad CPC was unique, nothing like the Spectrum.

Yeah they both had z80, but that was about all they did have in common. Even the screen was handled differently, the Spectrum's 2D coordinates were (y, x) as opposed to Amstrad's (x, y).

C64 here, which was from what I can gather, similar in capability to the cpc, although I think the resolution was a little higher.

When I got the Amiga I also managed to avoid the Commodore/Atari wars. My argument was that the Amiga's vanilla casing caught my eye as opposed to the Atari ST's grey casing, I liked both but the Amiga is what I ended up with.

My 6128 had an internal one, so no need for a separate drive. But, yes, judging by the size of my AtariST's external drive, I'd imagine Amstrad's attempts would be shockingly bad!

It was more than shockingly bad. Most of that size contained a PSU, that didn't include the controller which was a big arsed interface that plugged into the CPC itself.

This is the bugger, the power cord plugged directly into the disk drive, the rest of it went into the edge connector.

Don't get me wrong, it was a handy piece of kit. It did take up a lot of space and got quite hot on the rear end though.

Lots c64 owners loved the floppy drive, i eventually got one. i didn't really see the appeal, the damn thing was nearly as slow as tapes for loading games. the only good thing was to hook it up to my pc and copy downloaded games to floppys. whitch lost its appeal once i'd copied the hand full of games i still played.

I had the Amstrad 464 CPC with the cassette drive... it took forever to load games!! And since games back then were rock hard I would only play them for 10 mins or so before loading another!!

I found that if you turn the 464 off and then back on without cutting the power to the disk drive, the game that was in memory before still remains in memory and will run again if you use the same call address that's in the block loader.

I transferred quite a few games to disk by using that glitch.

Didn't work for every game but did for most of them.
