How pants is it that you get half way thru a box set (Falling Skies in this instance) and it just vanishes from the downloads.

Poor show Sky (a british satellite provider).... I may well put my sheckles into Amazon Prime

Happy coding!

I watched Falling Skies. Believe me, it's better that you stopped halfway through - forced to or not!

It's not a box set unless you can hold the box!!

I'm currently converting my Stargate Atlantis box set from DVD to MP4 onto my NAS drive, so I can lazily watch them from my iPad. Plus, this way I get to watch all the extras and the commentaries, too.. .. Because I'm a sucker for those!!

Murdoch is getting married to Jerrie Hall who is about 100 years younger than him. So Sky's prices will probably go up soon to pay for the fucking ring. :/

Isn't it sky's policy that when it's unavailable to download then you just can't watch it? Something to do with the rights I think. No wonder people turn to piracy.

No idea, but stuff you download from Sky On Demand just deletes itself at a future date. Sometimes a year or more, sometimes a few weeks. Guess it all comes down to licencing.

Personally I've never downloaded a so-called "box set" in my life. I'm not that massively into TV and I'd get bored shitless watching 18 episodes back to back of the same thing.

Netflix and Amazon are the same. Every day things appear on their list of shows/movies available.. But every day they also disappear, too.
It's all licensing and rights and other such bullshit.

This Site lists additions and removals to Amazon Prime's availability list. Note the nice big "Now Available" boxart notifications alongside the miniscule "removed" ones!

If I weren't too lazy to get up and put a DVD in my drive, then my DVD collection would be the superior setup.

But when I'm already warm and cozy in my bed, I prefer to lazily watch whatever's available.
I make it a rule not to get into series on either, though. I learned my lesson halfway through Castle!

Rip them all and stick 'em on a NAS! HDMI cable out of PC into telly, sorted!

Yup, that's what I'm doing.
I spent a good many years trying to find a DVD Ripper that would rip the videos and keep the commentaries, but in the end I've stumped for WinX DVD Ripper, which can get an episode of Stargate Atlantis, at a decent quality, down to a 250Mb MP4 per episode. I now have 2 copies of every bloomin' episode, one with commentary, the other raw.

Even with that, and with all Extras included, too, they're coming in at about 10Gb per season of 20 episodes, so it's not *really* all that bad.

Red Dwarf's already been done, as has Stargate Universe. Stargate Atlantis is what I'm currently on, and that's midway through Season 4, and then..
.. Then I start on Stargate SG1, which has over 200 episodes to go through.
.. Oh joy!!

As for the quality, they may not be "100%", but they are at least watchable, and if I ever feel the need to watch in better quality, I still have the original DVDs on hand, so that's nice.

Is it fairly quick to rip dvds then? I have a load I have to get rid of.

Web / Game Dev, occasionally finishes off coding games also!

WinX DVD's doing a 40-odd minute episode of Stargate in about 20 minutes.
I'm sure on a faster setup it'd be even better, but I'm just using my poor little overworked laptop to do it all!

It's a shame I'm having to get the lappy to do it all, really, but.. Meh, whatever.. The desktop PC's not even plugged in, and if I'm honest, it's DVD drive is LOUD AS FUCK!!!!

Atlantis is finally over!!
5 series, 100 episodes, and .. not as many commentaries.
I was hoping for one commentary every episode, but in fact it's more like 3/4 of each season, with gaps for unknown reasons.
Hmmm.. :\

Anyhoo, Atlantis is done.
I now only have to go through the 214 episodes of SG1...
...
*sigh*
