Changed the glow plugs on the car today - had to take off the EGR valve and manifold. All going swimmingly until I was trying to put the EGR valve back on, and dropped a 10mm nut - down the fucking air pipe! Had to jack the car up and strip it down from underneath to get the nut out. >:|

If only I had a quid for every time I dropped a nut down a pipe.

I'd have a quid. It's a first for me.

Didn't even know for sure thats where it was - one minute it was in my hand, then, gone! Looked all over the floor - nothing. Thought it was in the front grille at first cos something was rattling - took 20 mins to find out it was a pebble.

The only place left was the pipe. Luckily it didn't go down one of the ten inlet ports. That would have needed the engine out. :s

Get yourself a magnet on a string, ready for next time!

You can get some extendy stick things with a light and a magnet on the end for exactly this sort of thing. I keep seeing them in shops and going "nah, I don't need it now".

Then when I do need it, like last night, I haven't got one. :/

I just use a small magnet rammed in the end of a length of silcone tubing, the same stuff that's used as fuel tubing on model planes and car engines. It's flexible enought to go around bends and stuff, I even managed to retrieve a washer that had fallen through a sparkplug port.

Sounds like you're often having little accidents steve. Perhaps servicing your car is best left to someone else!

I can't tell one end of the car from the other
