Socoder -> Off Topic -> Site Updates - April 2007

Today I'm playing with Icons.

The list on the right is great, except you can't tell what sections each of the forum topics are on. So, might as well design a few little icons for them, right?
Except, if I did that, they wouldn't look right in every theme.

I'm going to work on the site script, and add Forum Icons as a new selectable theme thing. So, not only can you pick a set of icons to use, you can also set about designing your own, too.

It'll probably take a good couple of hours to get it all going, but most of that will be me desperately trying to draw a bunch of little 8x8 icons that look vaguely representative of the forums!

I'm thinking this..
One Small set 8x8, or up to 12x12 if your designing your own, which will be used on the right hand bar.
Another set 24x32, up to 32x32, for the forum list.
I'm also considering adding Panel images for each forum section, so that when you click into a topic, there's a nice little "Off Topic" panel there at the top.
.. I'm also thinking that if those are actually any good, I could probably get rid of the 32x32 icons, and just use the panels on the forum list.

Oh, and.. I'll probably include the Showcase "Which language/Includes Source/What OS" icons in the packs, too, since they're already held in the same place as the forum icons. (As well as the clocks, and the BBCode buttons.. Should they be changable?)

But please keep 'no icons' as an option in case none of the icons go with the theme >.>

And what kinds of icons because I'll have to make an 8 bit set for myself.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world -

I'll send more details on the lists of images required, soon, but for the minute click on Forum Home. You'll be wanting an 8x8->12x12 pixel icon for every forum section.

OK, that's that done.

Well, mostly.
I've made the icons and stuff, and it's all uploaded.
If you head over to the Site Themes page, you can grab an updated cssbuildset.zip file, which now contains a edit-my_forum_icons directory.
It's packed full of little images ready for editing.

If you want to make a set of icons to go with a certain theme, or would prefer to just make a bunch of random things, go right ahead.

Once I've recieved (or made) another collection, then I'll go ahead and add a Collection Selection thing in the Site Themes page. And probably reorganise it a little, too, since it's getting a wee bit cramped!

Urm, can I moan...

Ah well...

|moan| If you have 2 new PMs and you open one of them, it then says you have no new PMs... |moan|

''It works, but I'm not sure why it works...''

Yeah, the PM system uses an older "Have I read this post" thing. I should probably get around to updating that!

Read them from the bottom up, and you won't have that problem

I have to come out of my shy shell....

please Jay please remove the brightly
colored topic title bars. They are harsh
on the eyes.
Or please...lighten the colors.
I'd rather we have infrad red and ultra violent.

not a moan but a plead.

the red and also the blue is okay...I guess. Its just that yellow that first hits you. takes me awhile looking
at it. I'd rather they be black or white.
Tue, 17 Apr 2007, 12:58
Well, those bars look fine in the ShroomCoder theme.

|edit| Aaaaaa!!! Except in the main forum page! My 800x600 display cannot handle the sizes! Oh, the Shroomanity! |edit|

well, you haven't been sleeping
and slowly waking up. Besides, I like
less bright colors or at a reduced or softer
color. Blue and lighter reds are okay.
Its just that yellow for me. Yell! and ow!!

jokingly and serious!

a-ha!! told ya mushroom lord.

I really like the new changes. They also help to show that SoCoder is still alive and developing. So I'd like to ask what other future developments lie in store for SoCoder?

ackkk!!! ugh!!

Tue, 17 Apr 2007, 15:06
Power Mousey, once other bars start turning up, you can pick one. They all started off as blue, but then Diablo suggested difference colours. So.. Blame him

Not sure what's up with the logout button. I'll have a nosey, shortly.

800x600 = get a bigger screen. I mean, come on, you're a coder. How could you cope with an 800x600 screen!?

I kept the bars to 400 pixels across, since the right bar is about 160 and the left bar 160, too. (Although, those figures are theme dependent.) That's <800. I now realise there's also the "Last Topic" column on the main forum list, but surely that's one tiny little page. Is it really worth tweaking the size of the bars, just for that little page?

Future Developments.
I have a few planned, (nothing big.. Just little tweaks like todays) but Hero takes center stage for the next day or so.. So I guess you'll have to stay tuned!

Any suggestions welcome. And new sets of icons are welcome.

My suggestion was actually for each forum section to have it's own indeivual colour. Like Blitz Blue, Ruby Red and Off Topic Green.

Finally, Ruby is listed after Other when your selecting your language in the code snippet and showcase sections. Other should be last.
Wed, 18 Apr 2007, 09:31
And Delphi/Pascal should probably be removed from the language list.
Wed, 18 Apr 2007, 09:36
It has been, it's now the Python / Ruby section.
Wed, 18 Apr 2007, 09:42
No, he means the showcase language thing...
I replaced the Forum Delphi with Ruby, but added Ruby to the languages, meaning Delphi's still there.

Can't remove it, it'll mess up.. So, um..
Guess I'll leave it there for a bit, until something else turns up

Ruby. true.

When designing a new theme, will we be able to change the new Forum bars too? I might like to try to make a different [cough]better[/cough] set.

its cool. I'm sorta used to the yellow.
I sorta like the color of the bars.

But I just wish it was a different color.
So show me the color of gold. Gold bars even.

Yes, when you download the css pack, the edit-my_forum_icons contains a "Panel" directory, which is for those.
There's also a nice neat .bb in there to quickly build a bunch of panels for you, if you want to have a fiddle with that.

Site themes now include the new Icon/Panel selection list, and have been neatened up a little. As always, let me know if your browser messes it all up.

And yes, it's a little wide! It was the only way to fit it all in!

I'm just about to test something, so apologies if things go a little screwy for a few minutes!
