Socoder -> On Topic -> Monetizing Your Games

I'm procrastinating exams, and I thought it'd be a good idea to share ways to monetize your games.
You know, such as "you get the game for free, but you pay for a dungeon boost or an exclusive version of PlatDude with extra colors".
Stuff like that.

Another way to make lots of money is to make a lovely happy fun childrens game, and add oodles of paywalls into it!

Yeah, hahahaha. Money money money.

FWIW : Not all schemes are evil. I believe that Crossy Road has an almost perfect IAP/Advert scheme.
YOU choose when the adverts show. YOU choose whether to buy the IAP. YOU play to earn coins which also unlock the IAPs for free.
It's a brilliant mechanic, but even that's been overused by mobile dev's. And pretty much ruined in the process.

What started as "All these different characters" is now, much as you suggested with Alt-Colour Platdude, simply recolours that you pay for.

If a character can be recoloured or reskinned or retextured, then DAMN WELL put that into the game.. Let the player do that.
Fully complete models of totally different characters are not reskins, and those are ok to pay for. But not just reskins.

This shit is evil.

Let them play and get addicted, then cut them off from the next fun part and either force them to wait 24 hours (points system) or pay for instant play. Another clever way is to force them to watch an ad to earn plays.

-another method-

Introduce paying as a way to quickly level up in a multiplayer game. Let them surpass anybody who isn't willing to pay for a small fee.

Quit posting and try Google.

In my recent Android games, I display a full screen ad every now and again. The players earn ingame coins to buy powerups, but if they want they can buy ingame coins and buy to remove the ads.

Our last Android game, Chef Solitaire USA TriPeaks, for the past 3 months have made a very nice sum for us.

Hopefully our latest, Santa's Christmas Solitaire TP (TriPeaks - Google Play only allows a 30 character name), will do well too
