So now that retro has come back in a big way Nintendo are now throwing toys from the pram, although they never gave a toss about retro gaming before.

They may have the right to control their own stuff, such as Kirby, Donkey Kong, Mario, and other Nintendo exclusive stuff, but trying to kill off the whole emulation scene is taking the damn-right piss. Some of those titles are not not Nintendo exclusive.

I’m not sure what the current copyright rule is, I think it’s 75 years..? That sounds familiar.
..
But every NES/SNES/etc game is “produced under license by Nintendo”, so I think that they’ve got that to back themselves up with.

Most decent rom/abandonware sites have a disclaimer stating that, if approached by the owners, they’ll happily remove the games. I’m pretty sure that was always a “good practice” for these places.
That’s what should’ve happened here. A silent takedown.
The kickoff is completely unwarranted, although I expect the people trying to download the Roma are causing more of a stink than the rom sites.

Before those mini consoles came out they didn't give a toss and were completely snubbing the preservation of older games, now that there's demand for retro they are probably seeing this as a money for old rope cash cow.

to be honest, I don’t think it’s to do with the Retro systems. We’re nearly up to the 3rd year of those, that’s not a current event.

What IS a current event, though, is that they’re about to launch a Virtual Console of sorts on the Switch, with the “classic games for online subscribers” library.

Don't forget, Nintendo actually used pirated ROM files from these download sites when they created their virtual console games on the Wii.
