What Have You Done - 2018

Ups

What did you get done in 2018?
  • The 2018 Framework
  • Foldapuz
  • Online Sprite Generator
  • A few games..

Did everything turn out as planned?
The framework seems to be running ok, and I even finally (over the past couple of weeks!!) managed to get it running in HTML5, too.
Actual Gamedev has taken much of a backseat, this year, as I worked on more of the background stuff.
I still managed to get Foldapuz off the ground. I wasn't really sure how well that would work, but the puzzles are plentiful, and at least one guy on Twitter seems to enjoy it!

Typically Jayenkai - Mediocrity with little popularity, but really enjoyed by those who do!

    Downs

What didn't you get done in 2018?
  • Games, damnit!!

    Why not?
So busy with all the framework and side projects and things that gamedev wasn't really a focus.
Even my usual Advent Collection got sidelined, but that gave me extra time to work on a JNKPlat game, so that's ok!
All in all, if you look at what I've actually done this year, it "looks" like it's quite minimal. It's all the background stuff that nobody notices.

    Now

What are you working on right now?
I'mk currently trying to find a nice way to organise the C++ Framework so that other people can make use of it.

    How's that going?
    Not good!
It's very much rooted to my gamedev folder layout, right now!
But hopefully I can wrangle it enough that it works a bit easier.
    .. we'll see!

    Next

    What's the plan for 2019?
Not sure. But I'd like to focus on actual gamedev, and bulking up the numbers over 2019.
I also need to rewrite the Mac part of the Framework, so that it uses Metal instead of OpenGL. Then I should (*fingers crossed*) be able to get that running on iOS, too.

Android, though. Oh fuck, Android's a mess!!

    Ups

What did you get done in 2018?
  • Followed minecraft course and started minecraft clone.
  • Played lots of Minecraft
  • Made some music

Did everything turn out as planned?
Monkey2 is not really far in development. Lots of features do not work yet. So I have not been able to do a lot with it.
My father died, so that was a time where we had to see him go and then mourn and deal with the aftermath.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Lots of programming
  • Getting in shape

    Why not?
No energy for programming and nagging injuries with sporting.

    Now

What are you working on right now?
I keep working on figuring out how to program that minecraft clone. Infinite worlds and optimalisation being the biggest problem right now. Minecraft in a browser seems doable.

    How's that going?
I hope to get ideas while thinking about how to program all of these things. During Minecraft gaming sessions I think on how they might have done this and that.

    Next

    What's the plan for 2019?
  • Learn to use the Korg Kronos and fill up Soundcloud and Youtube.
  • More programming
  • Minecraft gaming(fishing and mining and terraforming and building skyscrapers)

Not so much of what I got done, more of a work in progress. It'll look good once it's done.

    Ups

What did you get done in 2018?
  • Got pretty far with NES ASM. Still not completed it but will do.
  • Whole bunch of shizz at work, EPOS System, Stock Control System, Other POS stuff, amongst website optimisation things and general branding stuff.
  • Had Infinitron 2016 finally released on cartridge for gameboy, yay!
  • Joined a local gym in November, been there 3 times a week since then, except for over chimbo of course, feels good
  • Made possibly the riskiest purchase of my life so far, it's only brought me good things ever since.

Did everything turn out as planned?
Mostly, although I was hoping to have finished coding up fla happy by the end of november, writing an audio tool myself has been a bit of a sticking point.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Finish Flap Happy
  • Make as many gameboy games as I'd like to have

  • Why not?
Just time and other commmitments really.

    Now

What are you working on right now?
Nothing, I'll be working on the Digitiser Game for Gameboy and Flap Happy though until they're finished, not starting any other projects now.

    How's that going?
We'll see next year I guess!

    Next

    What's the plan for 2019?
  • Get Stronger and Fit to hopefully run a half marathon either this year or next year.
  • Release Flap Happy
  • Finish Digitiser Game for Gameboy
  • Not get distrated by other projects!

Web / Game Dev, occasionally finishes off coding games also!

    Ups
    Got a promotion
Quit that job for a new job in Berlin
    Debt free
Built a successful 8 man dev team
    Released a product with 90% 5* ratings
Built and deployed working back end services for above game
Made some great progress on my operating system
Learned a fair amount of German
Lots of cycling done (best day was 30 miles with 2400ft of ascent in the peak district)

Did everything turn out as planned?
Well.. I wasn't planning on moving to Berlin so soon. So that was unexpected.
I failed to do a 60 mile ride I had planned

    Downs
I didn't get as far as I would have liked with my operating system
Didn't learn as much German as I would have liked
My cycling tailed off near the end of the year

    Why not?
    Too much going on.

This year was pretty good. In the past I often found myself starting/jumping
between projects which go nowhere. This year, despite not making as much
progress as I would have liked, I have only worked on valuable projects.

    Now
    More Operating System dev
More Elixir development of my backend services

    How's that going?
    Pretty good.

    Next

    Planning a wedding
    Planning a move to Berlin
    Become conversational in German
Improved diet and fitness, aiming to take part in the Berlin 100km ride in 2019

    Ups

What did you get done in 2018?
  • Work continued to be fun and productive.
  • A whole bunch of roleplaying stuff... together with my girlfriend we ran an online forum-based freeform RPG for three months for a few dozen friends, which was well received but ate all our free time (and then some) for the duration. We also ran a smaller, live, one-evening event for a small group of the same friends, which was also a lot of fun and a lot of prep work.
  • Plus attended various big live RP events put on by others.
  • A bit of spare-time coding here and there, before it got blown out of the water by the above!
  • Moved house.

Did everything turn out as planned?
The big 3-month RPG we ran was really quite a spur-of-the-moment thing, and is the main reason (besides also doing lots of coding in my day job) for not doing as much coding in my spare time as I would have liked. But life in general goes well.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Fixing my sleep schedule.
  • As much coding as I'd like.

    Why not?
Bad sleep habits picked up from uni die hard, especially when one dedicates all their spare time for 3 months to a crazy writing and admin project.

    Now

What are you working on right now?
Settling into new house, and all the admin and finding-things-you-packed-up-and-must-be-here-somewhere-dammit that that entails.

    How's that going?
I'm sure there's some sellotape around here somewhere, dammit...

    Next

    What's the plan for 2019?
  • Actually make some code stuff in my spare time!

The RPGs I ran, and the Advent of Creativity, have both reminded me how nice it is to Make Things and Share Them and When Other People Like Them. So now that I find myself with some free time again, it would be nice to continue that in some form. Will this amount to anything in the end? Who knows...
