DId you read the whole article? Yes, he does sound a bit of a twat at first, but he also makes some very good points too. This article isn't for the likes of us dabblers - this article was written for those people that really want a career in the gaming industry, but either lack the skills, or have no real idea what exactly they want to be or do. He's saying the opposite of all those Mums pushing their kids on X Factor, knowing that they are shit. He also talks about schools/Facebook/internet pushing classes at bright, young, hopefuls and tells it how it really is - it's about the school's benefit, not the student.

I've always counted myself (me,me,me) as being a "Homebrew" developer. Even my burst of iOS sales didn't change that mindset. It's a vast difference between what most of us lot do, and the great big world of .. you know.. actually doing this as a job and stuff.

But that's the case for everything. For every child in the school nativity, maybe 1 or 2 might end up as vague extras on Corrie sometimes. Rarely will they get to be a spoken actor.

Schools need to push, but they also need to teach the kids that.. honestly.. this might not work out.
You could end up on the arse end on the internet, dabbling with little games that maybe 10 people will ever see, and not getting anywhere.
Or you might break into mass appeal, and huge mountains of cash.

Don't expect the moon on a stick.

But definitely do aim for the moon.

Well, every success can be defined differently.

What is success anyway ?

If 1 plays your game ? If 100 plays your Game ? or if 10.000 ppl play your game ?

Where is the difference ?

- It is all in your mindset.

You can be happy if 1 plays your game, and you will have the same amount of happiness if 100 plays it.

Do not let "Others" define your happiness. The others are these "industries" and "companies".

They sold their happiness for money, and for them, one playing the Game is nothing, because it does not brings them so much money as they wanted
or needed to.
They have to sell and sell and sell millions and millions of copies so that their money increases, so they have to put their standards on success higher and higher.

But happiness ?
Money can't buy happiness, because it depends on the mind. And the mind does not need anything to be happy.

Yes money can make things easier, but i think happiness is more important.

Agreed.
But I can't imagine a school getting someone in to tell glorious tales of mundane non-fame, with an alarmingly penniless lifestyle!!

"Hey kids, make games like me, and you might be able to afford a new kitchen after writing 500 games! .. as long as you win the lottery or something."

Thing is though, Jay, you've made games that blow the socks off of quite a few of those so-called commercial titles. They are forgetting their roots there.

Yes, I am amazing. Me me me.
But the point is, you wouldn't want to push kids in that direction.
Education's important. Stay in school. Drink your milk. Don't do drugs.

Entering calculator mode:

Reading last post. - Check. (Edit: 5th post meanwhile)

Calculate 1+1. Check
Result 2. Check.

Calculate 1+1. Check

Result 1. Check. errr, wait, error, error ...

Debugging 1st case: 1 copper coin + 1 copper coin = 2 copper coin - check correct !

Debugging 2nd case: 1 drop of water + 1 drop of water = 1 drop op water ! - error error ! internal calculation failed.

*Rantmode off*

Maths, you never know when they are right !

Take, for example 1 Male + 1 female: 1+1 = 2, 3, sometime 4, and rarely 5,6 or 7 !

Edit: Took no drugs: Check !

Creativity seems to be lacking in education.
All the need to "score/grade" things usually ends up requiring a yes/no, right/wrong answer.
Art, Drama and Music exist, but creative writing isn't (or at least, wasn't when I was at school) a thing, and neither is "making some crazy game on a computer"
I'm not sure how something like that could be done.
But, boy, if it could!!!

Hmmmh ...
I wonder what kids would have to have, as a game. (considering kids which haven't played computer games, yet).

I mean, what games would they invent, without having prior contact with computer games ?

How would their imagination create games.
