Daily Poll Question

Does the daily poll only give out scores for first place? On the poll score page it mentions abouyt second and third places getting points but I'm not sure I'm seeing them coming through?

It's been fun to try to guess the popular answer each day and I'm kinda hooked.

If you voted for the winning item, you get 9 points.
If you vote for the second place, you get 5 points.
If you vote for third place (if there is one!) you only earn 2 points.

I "think" it's working..
It should be, the code looks right.

"Top of the Pollers
200 - rockford
195 - TKS
187 - Jayenkai
176 - Dan
170 - steve_ancell
95 - jprofitt
92 - AndyH
57 - rychan
23 - Pakz
5 - TomToad
5 - ProHiScore"

If it weren't giving out the 2s and 5s, those scores would all be multiples of 9..
Don't forget that it only counts the last 25 polls. (This was to keep it fair, so people who've been voting for years don't have a bazillion points already!)

That is kind of neat. I usually do not vote if there is anything I do not know about. Like games I never seen or played.

Sometimes I come back and think - I was on that score last time. Probably just me then

Pakz - I'd probably not be in double figures if I did that. :-p

Cosmic Consensus was the inspiration behind the poll scores, but nobody remembers that.

It's like Taskmaster at the top - anyone's game:

BTW, ever thought about interactivity-fying your paper puzzles - one of those a day, with a score incentive for beating them would be a fun thing to have.

Yay!!! I'm ahead (for today, at least).

I never look at the scores TBH. I just enjoy the polls (most of the time).

Yes I have. And I've been struggling to come up with anything that's as immediate simplistic as the polls, and isn't easily cheatable.
Anything I could write, game-wise, that runs in a script, another person could then write the script to solve the puzzle or beat the game.
The polls don't really work off a pre-determined answer.

If you've any ideas, though, let me know.

hehe - if you're worried about cheats, turn that into a game too. Track times, accuracy, blah blah and start deducting ... but yea, I can see why you perhaps have not done it already.

I did consider, and started writing, a daily doodle-box.
A 16x16 box with a few preset pixels.. complete the doodle.

.. couldn't think of a neat way to do a gallery, though, without it ending up a giant sprawling thing on its own site, which kinda defeated the point of a small plaything on the front of the site!

Spot the ball - but instead, spot the pixel!

|update| -=-=- |update|
9 points for a direct hit, 5 for one of the surrounding pixels, 3 for close, 0 for way off haha

Yes I have. And I've been struggling to come up with anything that's as immediate simplistic as the polls ...

Well, i have some ideas.
There are games, which can be played JFF.

Forum games. - In (other) forums they can be used to raise the post count (when some features are enabled (like pasting links or changing the status text)) by playing them.

They are, of course, turn based games.
Like:

"Last Letter First"

"Wordchain"

"Last Word First".

"ABCD"

Alternatively the "ABCD" can be on topic - like "Computer Games" or "Holidays" or "Movies". Topic may change when the z is reached.

Now, the idea is to have (see syntaxbomb.com starting page) a shouting box for such games.

The games could switch, lets say every monday or every month ...

The rules for posting could be:
- When someone post something, he is blocked until someone else posts something, or it resets the next day (just like the poll does).
- If someone posts something without sense, the next poster is allowed to write the correct word.

I have no idea about the scoring system.

Yeah, I think we have enough general chat here to warrant that as "spam for points sake"

I used to have a scoring system for ACTUAL content. Showcases, links, blogs and the like. The Powerbar would track what actual content you've posted over the past (iirc) 100 days, and give you a score out of 100.

The poll is out of the way, and doesn't typically clutter up the rest of the site.

As for having "forum games" topics for the purpose of fun. I'm not the only person on this forum. Anyone could start any of those at any time.

Hmm following the AndyH's post, the idea would be to have a grid based game.
Treasure/Points hunt.

A grid of about 20x20 or 30x30 pixels.

The users would lock in a coordinate, per day. (Just like the poll) for e.g. 10,24

Scoring would be at the end of the day. just like the Poll.

The Result page would tell who did how:

UserA, UserB - 9 points - direct hit
UserC,UserD,UserE - 5 Points - near
UserF - 3 points - close
UserG,UserH,UserI - 0 for way off

Placement of the Treasure (on the Grid) could be done by the System or
let say each user places a guessing coordinate, and sets a coordinate for the next treasure.

If a user gets a direct hit, his coordinate will be used for the next day, but he will be locked from the game for that day.
(The game would tell something like "Find the AndyH's hidden treasure")

If more players have had a direct hit, then the player which placed the guess 1st would get his coordinate used. (or maybe RNG would choose one).

Dan

Anyone could start any of those at any time.

I meant for it to be somewhere near/under the poll.

Something like a textfile, which gets the text added when someone is playing, and it is displayed in, kinda, realtime.

A forum game would need to be on top of the sidebar, or people may not know that it exists ...
sometime, if you can't log in for more days or weeks ... it tend to be forgotten.

But if it is in front of your nose - like the poll ...it can go and go. (well it depends on if others would play it ...)

Even a 20x20 grid would be too big.
I was thinking more 8x8, and the player getting 3 shots per day, with their score being displayed per hit.

But then what?
Points. Fin.

The polls work without points, and without being a game.
If something does end up going there, I'd like it to be more creative/imaginative.
And these nitty gritty grumbles are the reason nothing else has happened in the *checks* 13 years since I added the poll..

I'm very fussy, with myself more than anyone, about what should be there.
I'm my own worst enemy!

Everything I can think of, I can also think of five good reasons it shouldn't be there.

I think the poll is still the best idea. It's quick, clean and small. It also gives us something to think about - sometimes choosing an option can be tricky. I'm glad there are only four possible answers. Today for instance, has 3 really good PSP games on the list!

If any misunderstanding, I wasn't suggesting to remove the poll, I just like it as a quick thing and reason to try to remember to visit that a second 'thing' would also be nice.

But more importantlu... YAY!

Yea, I love websites and this place in particular, but I don't relly visit web sites as often as I did 20, even 25 years ago so it is a good incentive (for me) to think, ah...I need to check in on socoder, and as it means getting on a computer to view it there are only certain times of the day when I both remember and I'm on a (non-work) computer.

SoCoder works anywhere! It's very badly written, in terms of modern websites, so it should just about run on anything that does basic web browsing.
Time to dig out the old Nokia!
