Does anyone else remember early optical mice requiring weird hologram mousemats?

Either that or a grid of dots. Yeah, they required specific patterns to follow, so they knew wtf was going on!

I haven't owned a mousemat in decades!! Once "proper" Optical Mouses turned up, it was time to ditch the mousemat for good, and trawl the mouse over my woodgrain desk.

I remember some sort of patterned mats needed to be used with optical mouses.

I vaguely remember those mats but I was also more of a trackball user, even when optical started to come around. I used the top trackball type for years. Prefer it really.

Eventually, I have come around to using optical of course and they're not bad, a little glitchy at times, depending on the surface being used on.

Bah!, I never got on with trackballs. I don't get on with mousepads either, my mum's the same and she uses an external mouse on her laptop.

I'm using an external mouse for my laptop right now, haha

I've not used a mouse since 2012!

Wireless mouse on a well worn mat for me. I can't stand touchpads on laptops - I turn them off immediately..

I'm fine with mice, trackballs and laptop trackpads. The only things I don't like is the little joystick nub thingys on thinkpads. They're just stupid.

My current device is one of these microsoft thingys... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Surface-Arc-Bluetooth-Mouse/dp/B0748H383V
I like it.

I'm fine with mice

It's mouses, mice are rodents, you wouldn't call a row of houses hice. Plus mouses somehow sounds better than mice.

Just to think though, when I was a kid we had to use cursor keys to navigate.

When I was a kid, our cursor keys were shifted modes of the same keys, Down = Down, Shift + Down = Up, Right = Right, Shift + Right = Left.

@spinal: Was that on the Commodore 64 by any chance?

@Jay: Same here, Amstrad 464.

I've had soooooo many consoles over the years (you name it, I've probably still got it or thrown it out!) but I started with an Acetronic (similar to an Atari 800) BITD.

My first computer was an Amstrad CPC 464 (started with a green screen, but the monitor borked, so we got a full refund and upgraded to colour), then Amiga A600.

I've still got my PS2 Slim that I've had since 2004, and I have my dad's old XBox Classic Crystal and his old (still in box) NES. I've had so many people trying to blag the XBox and NES from me but I just keep telling them to suck shit.
