Warning: windows 11

Warning. My cheap low spec laptop wanted to install an update tonight. It installed windows 11.

The windows health check had said my cpu was not compatible two weeks ago so I was not expecting it to be installed.

It is the worst Windows yet. Worse than Windows 8.

Start menu is awful, couldn't find my apps. Couldn't remember everything I have installed, that's why I pin them to the start menu. I like the tiles. I like the tile groups.

Taskbar now fixed at bottom of the screen and it's huge. My screen res is low, under 800 pixels tall, I don't need to lose the vertical space. No options. No auto hide. No small icons. In windows 10 I have it positioned to the left.

Loads ofbloatware apps installed. F&#k off solitaire. And the other apps. If I want them I'll install them.

Now reverting back and it's warning I might have lost settings and have to reinstall some apps. What a #£@&.

Back to 10. Everything seems to be working, not lost anything. Phew! But what a load of rubbish 11 is.

Sounds like fun!
My MacMini is dual-booting Win10, and that's adamant that it won't be updating.
Should I expect it to appear, in the morning??!

Keep your fingers crossed it won't be. I was quite angry it updated. I usually like new versions of anything, but this just did it. didn't tell me it was installing 11 it just looked like a normal update until it rebooted and new installing updates font with a fancy blue light / gas effect animating in the background.

And if PC Health Check says my CPU is not compatible I'd not expect for the &*#@ thing to suddenly appear. OK, maybe I am still a bit miffed.

I'm going back to my Windows XP machine I think.

I had a nasty feeling that this sort of stunt would happen, just like they did with tricking users into upgrading to windows 10

I have zero interest in 11. The first version of 10 I had on my hybrid about 6 years ago was fine. Locked it down, got along with it okay.

Newer versions of 10 on my new systems is driving me crazy. Have them locked down, but do not like in explorer if you put it on icons you do not get any little pictures of the image files. Seriously? Somebody thought this was a good idea?

I had a very weird update just now. Booting up it was like setting up a new machine. I did actually wonder whether it was updating to Wndows 11. Thankfully it wasn't. I have no idea what it was doing tbh. My lappy shouldn't be elligible for a Win11 update, but reading about Andy's experience I'm concernd now. Perhaps my lappy was getting itself ready? Dunno.

Did you see blue cloud plasma-like effects in the background and a new font on the 'please wait we're just installing' screens. That's what I had that first alerted me to something going on.

Someone just asked if I was on the insider programme, I used to be but left it a while ago. It's possible it's messed up and installed due to that. Maybe because my cpu is not supported I am now the test case for Microsoft lol.

I still don't understand this aim for Microsoft to Apple-fy everything. Surely it's better to have a choice between two very different things, than end up with a choice between two things that are far too similar.
But, no, not in this modern age.
TVs are all the same. Phones practically all look identical. And now your OS, too.

MS has been Apple-fying since '95. MS had hired several people from Apple to work on Windows '95 and it was very similar in many ways, even down to icons used, not to mention "directories" suddenly became "folders".

It's been the same the other way around too, to be fair. In 2010 when I first had my mac book the os was working in much the same style as the macintoshes I had used in the 90's, but 2-3 years later Windows like features started creeping into osx.

@AndyH OT, but are you the same Andy who did some great stuff in Jamagic back in the day?

The Windows 11 update is ready to be installed on my laptop. I think I am going to try it.

I did an imogen BBC remake in jamagic with a friend, and a remake of arcadia.

Pakz, interested to hear what you think. I was miffed at getting it unexpectedly and losing all my settings, shortcuts etc before I was ready to spend time sorting it all out. I could perhaps live with that and maybe give it a chance on my other laptop with a modern hires screen, but this old laptop is something like 1280 x 768 and that blooming task bar was way too big making me struggle to use any of my apps on it.

So I was super grumpy. Bad Microsoft, no, in your bed.

The installation of Windows 11 went without problems. No nag screens about browsers or Office. It just went straight to the desktop.

The icons on the desktop needed to be cleaned up. There are a lot less on the screen now, so I had to delete a couple of dozen for everything to fit and to have some workspace.

Other than that I have been using it like I always have. No difference what so ever. I barely ever use the start menu. Mostly only the search menu through the icon(or four fingers tab on touchpad) to type in the tool I need.

I just tried the file explorer. There is more space between the file names now. This does allow you to select now, but there is less on the screen. The quick links are intact. Blitz 3d birds demo works too.

No problems yet. I stil need to check if my old 7thgen intel laptops can get Windows 11.

It'd be nice to have an "I will never be using a touchscreen, thanks." option. Seems a LOT of the complaints are about things being too big.

It really is a good metric of how backwards compatible a new version of Windows is. Mark did an amazing job on B3D.

My beefy Surface upgraded to 11 and the experience is quite different. I hate that I have to have the taskbar at the bottom, instead of the side or top. It's a pain in the butt to set up the start menu in a way that I like, and to remember what apps I had installed before the update to put back on the start menu (that is a big issue for what supposed to be an update). But I am getting used to it. I still prefer the Windows 10 Start Menu where I can create groups, resize it all and have it the way I want, instead of the way I am being told it will be. But getting used to it.

The rounded corners is a thing, not that hard but way too frustrating to grab than it needs to be. The snipping tool was annoying but that is fixed now. I've not hit multi-monitor or other issues.

My old laptop, with the smaller display, is still a poor experience if it was upgraded to 11. I have found there is still an option to hide the taskbar until you move the mouse to the bottom which would free up sapce but that is still a bit of a pain. There seems no reason why the taskbar wouldn't work docked to the sides or top as it has done for previous versions. So still bad Microsoft, bad, in your bed.

Stardock's Start11 would probably be useful...

Nice. I used a version of that for a while on Windows 8. (edit: yup - logged in, I still have Start8 - would have to buy Start11 though - thinking...)

Move taskbar to the top but not sides but can customise and use tiles so yay?

I have not had any problems with windows 11 in the month that I used it. But I started using the ipad more so, not a heavy user.

I was tempted at getting one of those macbook pro's. But that was just a hype moment.

I really can not get everything done without windows. Ipados is rather limited. I did start using the iphone for gaming now instead of the laptop.

Yeah, iPadOS, as good as it is, still doesn't let you do a lot of file-based stuff.
People online seem to be hyping themselves up that the M1 iPadPro's might end up getting more "Desktop OS" style features, but I don't think Apple intends to replace the Mac with iPads, that much.
I just don't see it happening.

If you can Remote Desktop to a PC, from your iPad, you can do more functional things, but...
.. then you need a PC to be nearby, and by that point.. just use the pc!!
