Outage - August 2022

Crikey, that was a long outage!
Welcome back, everyone.

Linode had a "Connection" issue, whatever that means.
They took about an hour and a half to fix it, but thankfully everything's working just fine. (I think!)

A planned outage is also due for Thursday night, so watch out for that.

The very next day, at roughly the same sort of time, the same kind of thing occurred.

Speculation is rife over on Twitter.. with Linode recently being bought out by Akamai, is it possible that a disgruntled employee is hitting a switch as they leave?
Or are Akamai trying to make Linode look bad?!
Hmmmm...

Tried to get into Socoder Tuesday and for an hour or two could not get to Socoder. Was having withdrawals pretty bad, amazing how quickly one can become re-addicted to Socoder.

Are you on a dedicated server or shared with them? They seem to have been pretty reliable in general.

We're on our own little "Linode".. Whatever that means. I presume a small self-contained computer as part of a larger server rack. But who knows how Linode really works on the inside.
I had to set up the Apache/MySQL/etc installs, manually, bit by bit.. Took ages!!

It wouldn't have made a difference, though.
The server WAS definitely running. (Foldapuz managed to start doing it's cache-refresh at midnight on Tuesday, even though the server was still inaccessible)
The issue was a "Power issue" with the connection, so .. I'm pretty much assuming someone switched off the router, an attack toggled the firewall, or maybe the router's on the fritz or something.
Again, assuming it's a router in the normal way that I think of a router. It likely isn't!!!

Whatever it was, it impacted both London and Frankfurt, because apparently the Frankfurt data goes through London.. (Which completely kills the point of having your server in Frankfurt, if you're close to Frankfurt..)

*shrugs*

Third outage in a month?
What's a good alternative to Linode?

"Our team has identified the issue affecting connectivity in our London data center as an issue impacting the data center's fabric switching. We are working quickly to implement a fix, and we will provide an update as soon as the solution is in place."

I have NO idea what that means!!!

For the price, you're probably not gonna get anything more reliable - AWS goes down, too

This has been a very unusually bad month for them though!

If it was something they'd done, it makes it all the more weird that it took them so damn long to tell us why it'd happened..

I guess it could be related to an AWS dependancy somewhere along the line, they've been down a lot last month, but it's just speculation at this point. Hopefully it's a one-off blip.

Web / Game Dev, occasionally finishes off coding games also!
