I slipped on the stairs; I wasn't paying attention (I turned, while walking down, to talk to my wife who was at the top).

She pushed me really (J/K)

Good grief. Guess you're lucky it wasn't worse, though.

Hope you're ok.

You took pictures of your bruised bum?

So... He had his thumb in his bum while trying to go down the stairs?

I hope it heals properly.

How're you coping?

Swelling is going down, bruising has come right out, my hand has started to ache continually, but is not painful par se. I can now touch my thumb and first finger together (but not hard). I can't even get my thumb close to the others.

But each day I'm getting more and more movement and less swelling and I'm able to do a bit more. It doesn't look like I'll be buttoning a shirt with my left hand anytime soon though.

Years ago a mate of mine accidently severed most of the tendons in one of his thumbs, he was on the operating table for loads of hours when they reattached it. Since then he's never been able to move the furthest part of it and it's always in the bent position.

@Ian:
Glad you're on the mend, I hope it's all over quickly mate.

When I was young I would sometimes bruise my thumb. This kept hurting for a long time. I think I can remember even having troubles with it years after the actual moment when it got injured.

Well, I hope that I'm not feeling this in years to come!

I dunno, that does look a pretty horrific dislocation.

I once broke my jaw on several places during a bike accident. That also took years before I had no more problems with it. It used to make a clicking or crack sound when I opened it far.

When you go visit fysio. Listen very carefully to the instructions

If they've given you any kind of brace for it, that'll help a ton. Keeps it in mind that it's there.
It's when you absentmindedly forget that it's there that you start hitting it or moving it too quick or something, and end up injuring it again!

Yeah, I got a brace. I've worn it since I got it (pretty much). I don't think I could sleep without it TBH - I'm sure I'd get my thumb caught up or knock it etc. etc. Oooowee!!!

As for the dislocation - yep the separated bones were more than a cm apart (as you can see from the X-Ray) and the end of one got chipped off too (so it's a fracture and dislocation). I'm waiting to hear from the Fracture Clinic and will definitely do whatever they tell me to do!

Probably not a good idea to have all that ID info available on the interent...

Fingers crossed that your injury will heal soon.

Update:

Bruising on palm nearly gone. Bruising on back of hand still visible. Swelling mostly gone, other than base of thumb. I can now touch first two fingers, with my thumb, all the time, third (ring finger) most of the time, little (pinky) finger sometimes, but not oftern. First two fingers with more pressure. Third with minimal, pink, none.

So, it's definitely an improvement.
