Stupid Britain - Linkage Why the resistance from the UK?

Probably a few reasons, I'm going to guess a combination of that no one cable type is going to last forever and it allows us to have a greater variety of devices available to us on the market compared to the EU who have just snubbed access to a whole bunch of devices in the future.

I guess insisting on a set cable type would kinda reduce the need to innovate within that space also?

Doesn't really matter what the "UK" thinks*. If the companies are doing it for the EU, they're not going to make "British people don't like standards" cables and connectors just for us*!!

* not us, them...

Well, yeah, but China might have their own ideas and plans for connectors. If China decide no push tech with a new, improved data rate / power handling cable then, well, it leaves the EU out in the cold.

Using lack of innovation as an argument to introduce your own proprietry (and expensive cable) is no longer an excuse - it's because of Apple and Sony et al that there SHOULD be a standard.

USB is a standard that has improved greatly since it's inception. It's 100% backwards compatible and a significant amount better than the original version. Same should be true of any cables too. All they do is carry an electircal charge (data and power) - it's only the end bit that varies. And that's not a good reason to make a million different varieties.

Innovation will not be stifle by a single minimum standard.

And yeah, wot Jay said. Companies will make their products for the EU and we'll get what they get, whether we like it or not. And that's a good thing TBH (for the most part).

Devil's advocate.
Apple drew massive backlash when they switched from the iPod connector to the Lightning.. it's one of the main reasons they've been reluctant to do it again..
They created the usb-c port, and everything's gradually been switching to it, with or without the EU having their say. I think it's only the iPhone that's still holding out from the switch, now, isn't it?

There are things that deserve to be proprietry and there are things that should be standardised. Having 58 squillion different cables for charging phones really is a bit much. How can you advocate that?

Oh, I absolutely agree.
Being able to charge my Mac, my iPad, my Switch, all from the same USB cable that sits at the side of the couch, is great!!

Having them be different can be a right pain in the arse. It's like buying a new console and having a different joystick port so you have to buy all new controllers. It's a bastard!!

You should try selling phones to people and explaining that the new phone does not come with a plug, only a cable.... oh and you have to buy a new more expensive plug because they changed them and your old one either does not fit or wont charge fast enough.
