Advent of Creativity 5

Welcome to Advent of Creativity 5, the 2022 edition!

Over the course of Advent (December 1st to 24th, and maybe 25th if you're feeling super-productive) your challenge is to post something new to the forum.
You can be as creative as you feel, posting any or all content that you'd like, as long as it shows an ounce of creativity.

What's Allowed

  • Write a poem.
  • Make a little tune.
  • Create some sprites.
  • Build up a selection of sound effects.
  • Make a silly little tool that creates lovely patterns.
  • Doodle a picture of a scene from your favourite Xmas movie.

I certainly don't expect anyone to have time to make a game each day, but maybe if you're aiming to release a Xmas game towards the end of the month, you could post a daily update blog, and some of the assets/gamedev blogs as you go along.

Really, anything goes, as long as there's creativity involved.

    Start

The postings begin on December 1st.
You might want to make frequent use of the [spoiler] tags!

    Winning!

Consider yourself "Winning!" if you can keep up the rate of one creative post a day over the whole event.
Since it's unfair to those of us who actually have busy and active lives, it's been decided that this won't be a true competition, but it is at least something to keep us active.
I do hope you all join in, even if you don't quite manage to keep up the daily rate.

    Be creative.
    Be happy.
    Be festive!!

Additional Note : I'm going to forego doing a MindPoke thread for this month, because.. Honestly, they're pretty much identical, other than the word list stuff.
.. But, someone remind me about that in New Year, in case I forget to bring it back again!!

Today's SpikeVent calendar theme for today is Sand!

Oooh, Festive!!! (Forewarning : The SpikeDislike themes aren't very Xmassy, mostly because they're permanent, and I'd rather not have 25 Xmas themed themes!!)

After having to skip out last year, I'm back with another themed challenge for myself this year.

For past Advents of Creativity, I've always struggled with scope. I'll pick a medium (e.g. Blender, ShaderToy) that I can ostensibly create a bunch of simple bits of art in that don't take very long, and then by around a week in I've managed to talk myself into something incredibly complex because I am nothing if not hubristic. But this year will be different! (...he says, hubristically)

The plan for this year is abstract art made only of rectangles, depicting seasonally appropriate things. For added challenge, the number of rectangles shall be equal to 25 minus the day number. So 24 rectangles on day 1, slowly marching towards 1 rectangle on day 24. Partly because constraints are meant to breed creativity, and partly because how can I possibly turn this into an overly complicated timesink if the art needs to be simpler each day? (...he says, with further hubris)

I am of course not any kind of artist, so this limited medium might start looking absolutely awful once I start running out of shapes. But let's see what happens!

    ---

So, with that introduction out of the way, here's Day 1, with 24 rectangles:
    > Reveal 🔎
I think I'm happy with how this turned out, and that it proves that this concept might work. Let's see if I'm still as confident in 2 weeks' time!

    Neat idea

I need to come up with a plan for the month. I'm slightly annoyed that all I seem to have is coding more bloody games like I always do. I've not spun into a bizarre creativity spiral, yet.
    Maybe tomorrow.

I'll keep updating my progress on the mindpoke thread and maybe get onto another lil NES game this month.

Yup, I just want to make a lot of easily re-skinnable games for the NES currently.

That and I've been looking through the sprites for my old shmup they are everywhere and wandering if I could somehow fit that into 32k of code somehow. with reduction to the sprite set and some other trickery for boss fights, etc. I might settle down to that tomorrow night with Layla, orrr get some more game coding done, I'm not sure.

"The number 25 at Christmas, with a claymation Wallace and Gromit"

AI Artists are rubbish at doing specified numbers, btw!
Last year's NightCafe ones were terrible once it reached the mid-teens. DallE's just as bad!

Oh well, its was 5 minute music composition ...

edit: if it helps, imagine being at an old computer (from 1869) which has only such tones and nothing else ...

"BBC Stop Motion animation with a bear and a cat, dancing around a number 19 at Christmas"

    Lovely number 19, there, DallE.
Fun Fact : NightCafe don't let you type BBC because their engine kept drawing Big Black Cocks!

Today's Spikevent is Synthwave'y.. And I forgot to make a more Synthwave-like choon for it. Aw well, never mind.

@Dan - I only get a black screen with your code. Something briefly flashes up on my screen but it's gone too fast to read. Then that's it. Pressing CURSORS and/or Y has no effect. Tried a few times.

    |edit| How odd. after the tenth? time it worked. ANd Y does nothing - SPACE does though.

@Jay - Nice snowmen stick puppets.

The issue might be down to the use of ScreenEffect("Soft")
I never did find a fast way to do a blur. There might be enhanced Canvas functionality, nowadays. I'll look into it.
I also need to fix that Text bug that Dan found the other day, and also see about getting Multi-Touch working better.
    Aye.. Lots to do!!
    Get back to work, Jay!

I have removed the ScreenEffect, just in case. (i used it because with it the pizza image looks like either pizza or cake ... )

I wrote y, but it uses the GamePad controls, so whichever button it is, be it space, y or z ..,

That's one thing that I think "the right wording" would probably help better. Code wise, job done! I sorted that way back at the start
I'm currently struggling with this at AGameAWeek, where I have browser games, JSE games, and Switch games.
How to have just one single way to say it, and have people (hopefully) understand.

Perhaps if we just said "directions and fire" that would do the trick? But then, how do you handle "the b button"?
Primary and secondary? Do you say "directions, jump and shoot" and hope the player can figure it out?
Being none-specific about the buttons helps, but .. just how none-specific do you take it?

FWIW, a lot of button combinations work in JSE . Cursors/z/x, wasd/k/j, space/Ctrl/alt work as main buttons too, gamepad (depending on device/browser), the onscreen buttons for touchscreens...
But how do you word it easily?

There's something really satisfying about the way those stick puppets turn as you move them. Fun to drag around.

Time to sit around the fireplace for Day 3, with 22 rectangles:
