Socoder -> Wednesday Workshop -> WM001 - The Pickups

Workshop Monthly #001 (Take Two!) : The Pickups
Time until Deadline

Month : 12 September to 17 October 2007
The Reason : Lets try this again, shall we!

The Challenge : In the old days, original game ideas were a dime a dozen.
Then people ran out of ideas and started remaking the old games, but with loads of pickups, in a vain attempt to make them into bigger games.
This month, that's what we'll be doing.

Either remake a retro game, or make up your own game.
Either way ensure that your game comes with a whole big bunch of pickups.

The more pickups, the better!

Standard Rules
The rules are pretty much the same as a standard workshop, except you have a bit longer!
This workshop closes on October 17th, 00:00 GMT.
(That's so that it closes on a Wednesday, and we can start a fresh one!)

Entries, as always, should be posted below.

I'll neaten this up as time goes on.

Last Time.. On "Monthly Workshop"
Last time we tried a monthly workshop was in September 2005
People complained that a month wasn't long enough!
Let's see if we can do any better, 2 years later!

My cogs are ticking over nicely, not sure what the pickups will do but I know how I want to incorporate them.

That doesn't really make sense does it?

My entry..
Greenie : The Eccentric Egyptologist

If you're going to enter the month long challenges, stick your entry in a showcase, then link to it.
Once I've bothered doing it, I'll set up the Monthly Workshop system to list entries for each workshop, and then link to their associated showcases.

Wed. Workshop entries are disallowed from the showcase due to most of them being really cheaply made quicky games, unfit for showcasing! Monthly workshop ones should (should!) work out a little better.

.. Is anyone else still entering?

I planned to, but didn't realize I only have a few days left to do it in!

Next one, I promise!

Like my hobo friend, I've found myself cut short, so to speak

I stalled when I realised the idea wasn't as suitable as I thought (I'd also spent an afternoon on graphics and then realised half of it was just wrong!) and I've been busy at work so never got my head back into it.

I feel really guilty because I was so up for the idea when you suggested it. You never know though, it may fit in with the next challenge and get me going again!

Well, to avoid Jay winning by default at his own challenge, I started an entry last weekend.

That gives me... 9 days to finish! And it doesn't even have any pickups yet! Oh, darn...

you could just do a checkbox on the showcase form that says "this is a monthly workshop entry".

What if this were not a hypothetical question?

I started an entry yesterday. It should be done soon.

My game is extremely simple, but hopefully it'll be fun.

You know what? I honestly thought this one ended last night!

I may still have something to enter but I'll be honest, it's not likely.

I'm completely shattered at the moment and my brothers bringing his family down for the weekend. Mind you, he may be up for some co-coding if I get my head back into it again...

You really shouldn't hold your breath though...

*phew*! Finally, it's done. Man, that was a rush...

Anyway, Shroom Monk (sorta) proudly presents:
Ninja Attack!

It should work. Not that I'll have time to fix anything that doesn't!

Enjoy...

Does anyone else have that problem?

Yup, same problem here, sorry Shroom.
If you don't get your game uploaded in time, I'll allow you a couple of days to get the bug sorted.

My entry will not be finished in time, due to a few things getting in the way (Homecoming, school, life in general, etc...). Maybe I'll finish it up anyway just for fun, though.

Right, for those with the graphics mode problem, here's a quick patch that puts it in a window. Simply download the other files in the zip, plus this executable into the same folder, then run the patched game.

It should work in theory - please post any problems ASAP so I can fix em! Thanks.

Well, it's a two horse race.
What happened, guys!?

Shroom, once you have time, shove your entry into a showcase, and then I'll get the new monthly workshop script working properly

Shroom's game now works. A bit slow at the start, and I was quite proud when I realised i could wall jump ^_^

Posted as a showcase.

I had to put it in Platformers though, cos there isn't an Action section, or a Mushroom section!

Screenshot Image broken on WM page. I'm not sure if that's because I didn't upload one, or you didn't take one (usually you take a picture for the WW...)

I'm leaving the screenshots up to you. Since their showcases, they'll be under your control.
If in the future you'd like to update your game, you can do. (Unlike WW entries, where, if you're going to update it, you might as well turn it into a showcase instead.)

OK, I'll keep that in mind for the future. Thanks for taking a screenshot for me though!

Also, when does voting finish? I assume the voting goes over a month...

Oh, and... |moan| Clicking on the 'Next Workshop' button on the MW page goes to the next WW... |moan|
