What's the most difficult technical problem you've solved?

Replacing the belt on my Dixons cassette player, back in the mid-90s. I used to dare to attempt things like that, back in the day!

Question of the Day : November 21st

How do you create music that fits a specific game genre?
Thu, 21 Nov 2024, 02:09
Jayenkai
I typically find it quite hard to "aim" for a style. Whatever comes out of my music tool is whatever it may be!

Question of the Day : November 22nd

What's the hardest skill you've had to learn?
Fri, 22 Nov 2024, 01:17
Jayenkai
When I was a kid I tried to learn miniature painting, and experimented with my HeroQuest set. Took me a while, and a whole lot of awful painting along the way, but I got fairly competent, and was quite proud of how well I managed.

Post-Op, that skill has long gone, as shaky-hands makes it infinitely worse than it was.
Maybe I oughta try to learn that skill again, but I'm not sure I have the patience to try to keep my hands steady enough for that.

Question of the Day : November 25th

Do you create sound effects yourself or use libraries?
Mon, 25 Nov 2024, 02:44
Jayenkai
A chaotic mishmash of all things!
Most of the sound effects in Shoebox of Games come from a copy of Monopoly (Mario : Gamer edition) that I happened to have sitting beside me when I started the project!

I used to use Dr Petter's sfxr a ton, though. That was awesome.

Question of the Day : November 26th

What's your favorite project you've ever worked on?
Tue, 26 Nov 2024, 01:43
Jayenkai
NeonPlat Adventures.
50 enemies each with their own capture-power up, a lovely Neonscape world, calendar level select, ooooh so many features.
That's easily the biggest game I ever worked on.
I gave myself a 2 month deadline, stuck to it, released it with such hype surrounding it.

.. then it tanked and nobody played it.

Question of the Day : November 28th

What's one art style that fascinates you?
Thu, 28 Nov 2024, 02:30
Jayenkai
I've always loved Cel Shaded, but it kinda got overused when it first became a "thing", and the higher the resolution in modern games, the worse it seems to mix with the graphics.
I think the best version of it was Wacky Races on the Dreamcast, but even that looked better when paused, as opposed to when it was moving in a silky smooth 3D environment.

Greenie's Typing Tutorium / Advent 2024

I honestly thought this would've been a doddle, and managed to get the basics into the engine in next to no time, but then a few issues creeped slowly into the project.
1. American English, and me trying best to figure out how to account for both, without making the typing more difficult.
2. I found writing the actual Tutorial stuff to be incredibly boring!
3. After a month and a half of semi-working on it, but also getting sidetracked by a hundred or so other bits and pieces, it kinda got left by the wayside, due to .. you know.. that whole ADHD Coder thing.

I think I've given up with it.
Project abandoned.
