Would it kill me to document things?!

.. Yes.. Yes, it probably would.

Do you have a strategy for promoting your projects?

Jayenkai
Nope.

.. And that's 99% of the issue, right there!

Question of the Day : December 23rd

Do you have a favorite keyboard shortcut?
Mon, 23 Dec 2024, 01:53
Jayenkai
I love how Ctrl+Shift+Escape brings up the Task Manager, because that shortcut harkens back to the Amstrad CPC, where it was used to reset the system.

... Doesn't do anything on the Mac. Maybe I should make it bring up Terminal or something..?

I'm actually going to second that one Jay, nice and easy to remember.

Also Alt + F4 to (usually) close programs that have froze.

Question of the Day : December 25th

How do you test if a game mechanic is actually fun?
Wed, 25 Dec 2024, 03:53
Jayenkai
Play it, and play it again, and again.
Honestly, if I can get through the entire development of a game without getting bored of a mechanic, then that's typically a fun mechanic.

Which baffles me when I play a "Proper" game, and the mechanics are bloody awful, and you wonder how on earth it got through such a lengthy 18-month development process without anyone going "Umm.. guys... this is a bit shit.."

Question of the Day : December 26th

What was your happiest childhood memory?
Thu, 26 Dec 2024, 04:21
Jayenkai
"was"?

I'm not sure why this sprang to mind, but I have a strong recollection of the first time I played Stunt Car Racer. We were rising my Uncle/Aunt's, and they had a (wowie) Atari ST. Me and my older Sister were allowed to play on it, unsupervised, whilst the adults sat chatting and being boring in the living room.
Stunt Car Racer was thoroughly enjoyed, up until we had to stop because Sis was about to vomit

.. Nowadays, that'd be me doing the motion-sickness.
Oh, how the tables have turned.

Question of the Day : December 27th

How do you set your priorities during development?
Fri, 27 Dec 2024, 04:15
Jayenkai
Priority One : Don't forget to start a game, today.
Priority Two : Are you done yet?

.. I really need to add "don't forget YouTube" in there, somewhere..

I don't, that's why it's taken 10 months to create a game that would take other people a couple of weeks.

Although I am reasonably pleased that I haven't completely given up on it yet.

Please don't ever judge "how long a game takes" against me! I'm very much an outlier!!
Most people tend to work in the realm of months, and 10 is great, given the great attention you've given to all the elements.

That's a game, right?

Been thinking about this one for a while, today.

I think it's Classic Invaders on the CPC.
My uncle got us it, IIRC, and I was all "booo, boring space invaders"
Even at such a young age, I'd already decided that every Space Invaders game was slow and dull and boring.

But then we played Classic Invaders, and WOW!!!
It was still one ship, many invaders, 3 shield-bases, one bullet. But .. My god, it was fast.
It was like someone took Space Invaders and ramped it up to .. Well.. Level 7!!!

And, I think that's stuck with me, all these years. That's kinda my whole gameplay style wrapped up to a T.
It might look old and worn, but the "feel" of the games is what's important, and I continue to strive to make games that don't bore the pants off you.

Oh, no, its not that, its more that its been 'nearly finished' since about 1 month into it and every time I sit down to finishe, I write maybe two lines of code anmd watch youtube clips for 3 hours.

Not sure if it was one game, but not having much money to buy games when I was a kid contributed to making games and the 10 liners in Amstrad Action.

Question of the Day : December 30th

How do you practice and improve your art skills?
Mon, 30 Dec 2024, 06:04

They say "practice every day", but I'm honestly not sure that 3500+ Daily Platdude Pixelarts has improved my art skills in the slightest!
