Youtube (un)screws the UK

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7933565.stm
Much like all those crappy video streaming sites that block out the UK, Youtube's now stopping a big bunch of UK Music Vids.

Thanks Youtube.

Stealth
Stop pirating music then.

I don't see why YouTube wouldn't remove all the copyrighted music videos. They've already been sued by Viacom for it.

Everyone is putting piracy on the bottom shelf now and somehow it's now acceptable to steal videos. People couldn't be more far off. Just because it has become the norm on YouTube to find music videos, it doesn't mean it's fair or right.

I partly agree with Stealth on this one. Only partly because do people really use YouTube as their main source of music? I'm not saying people don't listen to music on YouTube, just that I've always gotten the impression it isn't really a viable alternative to other ways of listening to audio. Not when compared to say buying a CD or an MP3. People treat it genuinely as more of a "try before you buy" service then they do with piracy.

I'm just saying I don't think it's anywhere near as damaging to the music industry as other methods of music piracy.

This again just goes to show the music industry is stupid. IMHO, record labels should be paying Google for advertizement on YouTube, not the other way around!
Now, I'm sure Google wouldn't actually charge such a fee - but does the record industry? Heck yeah!

My roommate is subject to this retarded witch-hunt. He made a Nine Inch Nails fan video for Capital G off of Year Zero, mind you he used the Y3@R Z3R0 R3M!X3D multitracks, which are licensed under creative commons by Trent Reznor himself, not Interscope, not anyone else.

However, his videos outranked many of the official NiN videos, and Interscope began sending their lawyers after us, demanding we remove THEIR song from our video. When we didn't, they went above our heads and contacted youtube, which deleted the video.

So we then proved that it was our own audio, NOT anything with interscope, but yet it continues, to this day. Look it up, it lingers on, audioless and raped by this inane war. We're still in heated arguments with Interscopes bulldog lawyers, but i'm not fucking wavering for these clowns, not now or ever.

We actually researched everything generated by that one video, how much traffic it sent, and how many links it went to (including Nin.com, the OFFICIAL website!), this one video could have been responsible for over 500,000 new listeners, not to mentioned the 2.2 million others from different sources.

I can agree that it is up to the artist to divulge how they want their music posted, otherwise or not. I -am- tired of seeing the same video stolen over and over and reposted, that should be in the hands of who produced the video, but a lot of this shit is getting out of hand.

Look around you, the way your media is deployed is shocking. Record companies are stuck far in the past, and that's why it's a failing business. Don't believe me? Above mentioned NiN, look at their sales from 'social media' rather than a traditional album, it didn't fall. Look at Radiohead, look at others. I can yammer on all day about this, but I'm not. I'm simply leaving it as this: Fuck the record companies, they deserve to burn. Also, Fuck Youtube, Vimeo is Better.

Don't like it? Oh well. Tough Shit. "Piracy", if you call a video on youtube that, will never cease. If we could clone things like we do data, we'd pirate our clothes, food, and other needy crap us greedy excuses for mammals need.

In all seriousness, look at nine inch nails and how trent reznor has handled this 'piracy' problem through videos, torrents, ect., You'll be surprised. If a band is worth a damn, people WILL support them.

(PS: I'm very bitter towards the topic, so take this as being very subjective!)

In my opinion, having your friend say "Hey, have you heard X/Y/Z track" and then having the ability to listen on YouTube, is SO much easier than having to track down the band's official site, and wrangle with Quicktime before it'll play the 200x160 video. .. If you're lucky.

YouTube has become "Sample the world", except we're no longer allowed to sample music or CBS shows.

Next up, "America's Funniest Home Videos" will buy the right to anything they find funny, and then block those so they get more viewers. (I'd have said "You've Been Framed" but ITV aren't even in a position to buy a bar of chocolate, right now!)
